XTVA Problem

Post by sixtygp »

Hello- I have a new XTVA for a XTS 3000 800mhz trunked portable. The radio is for a public safety smartzone digital/analog system.

The XTVA is installed in a 2008 Ford Explorer. The problem is when the portable is attached to the XTVA, the transmit and receive function , but there is no backlight or display on the LCD on the Hand Held Control Head. I can adjust volume and change channels with the mode selector, but because the display is blank, you cannot tell what channel you are on without looking at the radio. Radio tech believes it is a defective XTVA, and others I have talked to say it is a programming issue with the portable. I do have the rf adapter installed on the radio.
Could the XTVA be defective or is this a radio programming issue? Btw, how do you setup the HHCH so the buttons mimmick the radio buttons- scan, zone select, etc.? The installers threw out the manual.

Thanks, Matt

I would first try plugging a known good HHCH into the XTVA and see if it functions normally, this will tell you if the problem is the mic or the cradle. If a good HHCH works, then it sounds like you may have a bad display on the control head and need to replace it. I have seen them on scambay for $50.

For the HHCH back lighting to come on automatically, you must enable this option in CPS. You can check to see if the back light on the HHCH works buy just turning the light on on the radio and then placing it in the cradle before it turns off...it should light up the mic if all is well.

as for setting up the buttons on the side and top, its done through the HHCH menu page in CPS under radio cofig. The numeric keypad and soft keys will work as they do on the radio automatically.

We did plug in a good HHCH, and it did not display. They took the whole unit back to warranty it. I will advise the techs about the programming for the other functions. Thanks very much. Matt

What is the host rev in the radio? IIRC you had to have newer firmware for the display to work, but I may be wrong on that.

I do not know. The last time the radio was programmed has to be at least 4 years ago.

Turn your XTS on then off and press the lower side button,(the button with 2 squares) 5 times to display the Host software version.

For the Astro XTS/ Dimetra MTP XTVA ( models N1799, N2003, N2000, N2001 and N2003) you need software R05.52.03 or later in the XTS3000.

Also some more info on the XTS XTVA and the PLN7737 HHCH from my manual:

If your radio is a 6 keypad XTS version, model II, (this applies to XTS models only not the MTP radios ) then the numeric keys on the HHCH will have no functionality.

If your XTS is a non display version, model I, then the display, programmable side buttons and the keypad on the HHCH will have no functionality.

You are correct. For the XTS3000 to work properly in an xtva with a HHCH the 3000 needs software ver R05.60.00 or later.

Update-

The Software in the XTS 3000 is R07.02.02. The radio has a full 18 key keyboard layout on the front. It is a model III XTS 3000. We tried another XTS 3000, same problem. The XTVA unit was sent back to Motorola depot (its brand new). They said they replaced a RF cable. Still no display on the HHCH. If I push the backlight button on the radio when it is in the XTVA, the HHCH will light up. If we insert a XTS 5000 the unit displays fine- just like it is supposed to.

The tech connected the XTS 3000 to the pc and tried to find a feature under the CPS to activate the HHCH. He couldn't see it. Last I knew, he was in contact with Motorola. He advised me that Motorola had to do some more research and will get back to him.

The control head is model # PLN7737B.

Any help is greatly appreciated.
