Hey guys. I'm new around these parts, so excuse my ignorance...

I just got an XTS 2500 Model III. I have an IMPRES battery, but not an IMPRES charger. I'm assuming I will eventually need to get an IMPRES charger to take advantage of the full battery features?

Also, I am trying to access some of the menu options, as in anything outside of the three options presented on the three front "Menu Select" (softkey) buttons but the radio just beeps at me when I press the right directional arrow on the D-PAD.

I apreachate your help in advance.

1. Yes, you need an Impres charger to get all the advantages of Impres system. The
radio will give you an Impres readout but you won't be able to cycle the battery
properly in a charge mode unless you have the charger.

2. The reason you get only three functions on the bottom of the display is because
those are the only ones programmed into the radio. There are maybe 20 or so of them
but your radio has not been set up for them yet.

How come I can't see the battery status then?

How does one program them for the radio within CPS?

1. I don't know the answer to this. My Impres batteries have always just indicated
their status on my XTS radios. Impres batteries can be touchy. If you put a non-Impres
battery in your radio the BATT command should tell you it's not a readable battery.
There's also been some stuff written about an Impres battery needs to be "set up"
correctly by initiating its operation with an Impres charger. Someone can jump in here
and clear this up for you I'm sure.

2. You learn how to set the menu under the MENU section of the CPS. There are two
columns. The left one has all the options which you select first then move it to the right
column. Takes longer to explain than to do it. Use the help menus in the CPS and you'll
get the hang of it pretty quickly.

He is not using an impress charger with his impress battery, therefor he will not see
the battery state of charge indicator on the xts2500 display.

If you have an impress battery on the XTS2500 you will see a batt indicator, however if you do not have not selected the batt item in the menu selection it will not display BATT on your display in the menu. If you do not have a battery indicator to the upper right of the display you are not using a impress battery. I have both impress and non impress batteries on my XTS2500 and 5Ks and when I have impress batteries on my radio I will get a batt indicator, even if they are new out of the box with out the initial charge...


On another note, an impress battery will not charge properly in a non impress charger. This i have found out by experience. Yes the battery will charge but not fully and will not be very reliable.

Agreed, this is correct...

Isn't it also true that if an impres battery goes through X number of cycles in an non-impres charger, it will lose it's impres status, and only function as a normal battery, even if it was initialized in an impres charger?

That is correct. The Impres battery will usually lose its unique features forever, after a single charge cycle in a non-Impres charger.
