They gave me a new Chevrolet Impala unmarked several weeks ago and I am using a Motorola XTS5000 in an XTVA. Whenever I use my Motorola Nextel i560 I hear the tell-tale iDEN noise through the loudspeaker. I suspect that others here have had to deal with the same issue, but I couldn't find anything on a quick search, but maybe I am not using the correct search terms. Anyway, what is the fix for this? I was thinking of trying a toroid choke, but I wanted to check here to see if that is likely to be successful.

Also, I use the XTS5000 on an 800mHz digital trunked system, but I only have a single level priority for the selected talkgroup. I found of recently that a friends XTS5000 on a nearby sub-system has dual level priority. I mentioned this to our radio technician today when he was updating talkgroups, but he said he thought it was simply not possible on a trunked system. Is there any document that I can point him to where he can learn about this option?

You should be able to scan multiple priorities (what you're referring to as a dual level priority) by selecting the Priority Monitor scan type for the scanlist you wish to use on the trunking system. That will let you select P1 and P2 (usually selected talkgroup and fixed, respectively). This scanlist will be limited to strictly trunking talkgroups.

the problem with iDEN is the use of TDMA, the rapid cycling of the transmitter is what accounts for the noise. It usually finds it's way into anything that has an audio amplifier, sometimes the speaker itself (the coil) acts as an antenna. Not much you can do about it (switch carriers to a more modern broadband network ala CDMA? CDMA phones are very friendly to other equipment nearby) other than move the handset as far as possible away from the device experiencing interference.

I have an XTVA in my car, and I use Nextel but haven't noticed it getting into the amplified speaker. Out of curiosity, is it the newer-style speaker or the older-style that looks like the non-amplified speakers?

Snap-on ferrite beads over the speaker cable at both the cradle end and the speaker end would be a good start.
