R100 Programming, DEVICE NOT READY

Anyone know how to get one of these little bastards to program? I'm using an old 25Mhz laptop, slowest thing in three counties, and it won't read or write to either the transmit or receive, just keep getting a Device Not Ready when i try to do anything. I checked and double checked the com port setting, the laptop only has one com port, i thought maybe it was my cable so i sat down and built a new interface on perf board, again no dice. I have ruled out everything but the repeater now.
Is there some magical voodoo you have to do to the repeater before connecting it to the computer to get it to read and write the damn thing??

Just checking, but you are only using the cable from the CPU to the R100, right? No RIB interface box.

Yep, built one based on the schematic on the batlabs site. Although instead of using a db-25 i used a db-9 and converted the diagram using the correct pins. Thought i might have had my db-9-db-25 conversion wrong so i built a second one using a DB-25 and plugged that into my known good serial cable that i use with my RIB, and still no go.
Any ideas??
Please, nobody say "get a slower computer" because this 386-25 laptop does everything else i have been programming for years, including X9000's and other picky old radios. I can't even find a slower one, i spent about two years trying to find a 286, lol.. They don't exist in these parts anymore. Its hard enough to find a Pentium 1 let alone anything older.

The schematic on the batlabs site shows for a db-25:
2
3
20
7
4
Convert that to db-9 and the pinout should be:
3
2
4
5
7
Correct?? I double checked this a few time with the RS-232 standards book that i have on the old library shelf. If i'm wrong let me know, because i have tried it both with a db-9 and with a db-25 and i still get "Device Not Ready".

Well, I remember I had an old slow Radio Shack laptop that had the 9 pin connection, and it wouldn't work for Motorola programming. I had to find a differenct CPU. Maybe it is the computer, or does it work for other programming applications?

Yeah i gave up on it, tossed it aside and changed the plans for it. So its all good i guess. It works on the pair its currently on, just didnt serve our current purpose.
