Hi

I have a GM900 and want to reprogram it.
What RSS shall i use or is there a better windows program?

If I run a RSS program, can it run under a DOS-box or must it be a real DOS pc?

If you run a DOS RSS under the fake DOS that runs under Windows you run a high
risk of bricking the radio. It is always better, and safer, to run a DOS RSS under
true DOS, which means booting the computer from a DOS 6.22 disk. You might even
be able to read the radio with the Windows DOS but you probably will not be able
to write to the radio.

Different DOS RSS programs have varying speed capabilities, so the safest machine
to use would be a 486. I personally run a P5 at 25 mHz and it always works fine.

Im running a 3GHz machine with XP. (And Linux) It's to fast i guess?
Finding a 486 can be a hard task, so if I at least could boot directly into DOS on my "monster" machine?

Some of the later generation RSS programs will run on fairly
high-speed machines, but you can find 386 and 486 machines
at ham and computer fests for $20/$40 these days. OTOH,
you know with certainty if you get a slower machine and boot
it from DOS 6.22 that you will not have a problem.

If you have the time you could also do a search on the Board
for additional info on the subject. It's been discussed in several
threads extensively over the past few years.

On Win XP all the DOS RSS will not work with the RS232!
Win 95 is the better choice to use DOS RSS,but you can still have problems.
I never tested it on a 3GHz PC,but I think it should work with real DOS and a real RS232.
Sometimes it is better to disable the cache in the bios.
