Please pardon the dumb question, but I need to know whether an analog Spectra control head (i.e., A4, A5, A9) would work on an Astro Spectra W4-W5 radio. I know the cables are compatible but not sure about the control accessories. I don't want to let the magic smoke out

Nope, your analog spectra head will not work on a astro spectra. You would need ones with the W designator to make them work. Swapping between W4, W5, W7 or W9 among astro spectras is possible, but require changing some bits in the radio which isn't well documented.
