Hello all.

I finally grew a set and decided to try to program my first piece of Moto gear. I have a Radius M1225 that I want to program.

I have the options of a Desktop computer (with a 9-pin serial port, or USB) running XP
OR, a crappy old laptop running Windows 98, with the serial port.

Do you suggest running 3.1 on the laptop, or going for the gold with 4.0 on the desktop?

i also have several types of rib-less cable's I've found. I'd like to try a USB one, but if anyone suggests that it would be a pain in the ass to use, I've got the serial ports available on either machine.

Here's what I've found for cables. (Obviously I can make my own but I'm not that technologically advanced.

USB-

Serial Multi-utility

(This one would be nice, as I also have an HT1250 that I use at work that I would like to be able to program)

other Serial Multi-utility

(And this one would be nice because I also have P1225 that I could use it on.)

Any suggestions on version / cable combo I should use? I would prefer to use the XP desktop and USB but like I said I don't want to spend money on stuff that isn't going to work. From what I gather the serial cables are more trusted.

Looking at how they have designed their products, I would RUN, not walk, away from them! With designs like that, you are just asking to brick (corrupt, ie. turn into a paperweight) a radio. I would suggest either a Motorola original (preferred), or a good, quality Motorola clone, such as those built by PolarisUSA, or Sandy Ganz (a member here on the board, you can find his RIB clone for sale HERE), and a properly-made cable to interface the RIB to the radio. Schematics for the various cables needed can be found HERE. Keep in mind that a Polaris RIB's pinout is slightly different from a Moto original. There is a "crossover chart" linked on the web page with the cable schematics. Both RIB's and cables show up for sale here on the board from time to time.

I would use the Windows 98 setup. I have not had luck with any other. As far as the cable issue, I would not take any chances.
