XTS3K Q947 (APCO Packet Data) Capable?

Post by W1HVN »

Here is something interesting I ran across,

Is it possible for the 3k to do Q947 (APCO Packet Data) and therefore be TMS capable? It was my understanding that this generation ASTRO (same generation as Astro Spectra) was not capable until the 2500/5000 came along in the current generation (also with the XTL series)?

There are a few "interesting" 3ks on fleabay with advertised flashcodes that have this option. Funny thing is, the flashcodes on these radios are the same as the example on the akardam decoder. Hmmm. Coincidence, perhaps.

That option is valid for the non-Astro25 radios, but non-astro25 radios are not TMS capable. The Astro25 radio's use that option for TMS as well for as for packet data.

There is a Packet Data flashcode option for the XTS3000, Astro Saber, and Astro Spectra. Unfortunately, it doesn't allow packet data to be transmitted directly from one radio to another. It requires Motorola's P25 Integrated Voice & Data setup, which is a whole rack of equipment that costs hundreds of thousands. All data must be sent through the system, as opposed to radio-to-radio. Text messaging isn't supported.

The XTS/XTL 2500/5000 (Astro 25 radios) have more direct packet data and TMS support.

APCO Packet Data on the Astro series does not support IP. On the Astro25 line, it does.

Great, thanks again guys.

akardam, did you ever find out if you only need the Q947 to do TMS with 5000/2500 units as in your sticky? There was some mention of needing other options, but at the time of posting it could not be confirmed. Just curious, a fellow APCO repeater owner is looking for a radio, and we want the ability to do TMS. Thanks again guys, great info. The learning curve is beginning to flatten out!
