What's the story about the XTS3500?

These are pretty rare radios, not much information therefor about the XTS3500.
Were they developed specially for some purpose? What splits were built?

I know FDNY had some UHF ones for their system pre 9-11 . I dont know if they still use them. I have a VHF 136-174 Model III. There is still some info on MOL as far as Repair manuals and RSS manuals.

My understanding is that they came out as an interim model between the 3000's and 5000's, mostly for the fact that it supported stronger encyption options that the USGOV wanted/needed at the time. Other than that, and a faster processor, I think thats pretty much it. I know there were a couple of other subtle differences but nothing that would want me to dump my 3k's for 3.5k's.

Most (if not all) XTS3500s in FDNY are in service after 9/11. Most FF have model 1s, while EMS have model 3s.
XTS3500 uses RSS, to the best of my knowledge no CPS were developed for XTS3500.
I believe they were the first radios that have the fireground accounting system, which later became standard for the ASTRO25 generation radios.

Houston FD also has a bunch of Model 1 3500s, S-split, basic P25 (that they don't use) and conventional flash. AFAIK, they were purchased 2000-2001.

Also, as far as I know, there was never a trunking option for the 3500's either.

was developed for Type 1 encryption.
was first radio to use an integrated vocoder (a la Astro saber) vice the 3 board layout of the XTS 3000.
no trunking option was ever officially available for the radio... any radio with trunking is Hax0r'd

From what I remember, I think the 3500 utilized the same firmware code as the astro saber & I do know that it was the 1st portable to support the UCM. This is per a recently retired Infrastructure engineer in the secure design center @ mother M in Schaumburg.
