How does red battery edit HT1550 XLS Freqs.

Out of cureiosity how does the red programming battery enable the HT1550 XLS to go into edit mode for the frequincies and make the radio Front panel programable? Is these a chip in the battery that the radio reads or is these a chip in the radio that knows you have a red program battery on it? Could you take the chip out of the red battery and place it in the HT1550 and not need the red battery any more and make the radio a permenet FPP and be able to put on any battery and still have FPP? Thanks in advance

i had planned on taking mine apart when the battery goes dead but it's still good, maybe somebody else has a bad red battery?

Not that it much matters but the FCC requires a dongle in order to activate FPP, so a radio with the chip removed and installed directly into the radio would be non-type accepted and then should only be used for amateur frequencies....
Just a bit of info, just sayin'......

Thanks Jeff for the insight, maybe its best left alone or not, look at the JT1000 mod, I don't know, was just curious, but thanks Jeff and all for the insights.

RC, great job!! Are the flex part numbers the same? Can you see what the difference is?

Offhand I see different numbers on the chip, third line. That doesn't automatically mean they're different chips, they could be programmed differently. It's possible that the batteries report basic info to the radio such as chemistry, serial number, capacity, and a flag for FPP. Since the black battery has a chip to begin with, I figure the batteries are smart to a minimal degree, although they're no IMPRES batteries.
Since both batteries have these flexes in them, you wouldn't be able to just solder a red battery chip into the radio somewhere. The best you could hope for is to dump the chip into a good black battery but you'd end up destroying it to open it up. Perhaps battery eliminators have a similar flex and you'd be able to dump the red battery chip into one of them and have a FPP battery eliminator, but that's a stretch.

The flex numbers appear different L04 (Rev C)for Red and L03 (Rev A) for Black.
Just my observation.

Yes your right, probably a newer flex revision, but they look the same other than those chip #s.

Looks like a custom made IC from Dallas with a number in it like the I-Button.
Remove it and put it in the radio to try it out.You have to use the middle contact and ground.

what i would like to know is if the chip in the red battery is telling the 1550 to enable fpp or is the chip in the black batteries telling it not to work? some black batteries won't even run the battery meter so there's a difference in the chips there too. my guess is the red one tell it to work, i'll have to put mine on a power supply and see what happens with no battery or chip?

I surely would like to know the answer to this mystery, I assume its the red battery telling the radio to enable FPP, and I might remove it from the flex and put it in the radio hope it does not short it out and fry my board!
