I recently aquired a Syntor X 9000 (28-54 Mhz). Upon cutting on the control head on, it says FAIL 01/90, which I have looked up the meaning (CONTROL UNIT FAILURE).

I took the radio cover off, and there was a sheet with the bench test remarks by a technician (power, sensitivity, deviation, etc). At the bottom of his test sheet, under remarks was this: "REPROGRAMMED, MODIFIED FOR PAC RT".

My question is this: HOW DO I UNDO THIS MODIFICATION?

I have tried to re-program, but as soon as you try to READ THE RADIO, it goes into a serial buss failure mode, or words to that effect.

I currently have another X 9000, and there is no problem with my software, or cables.

I would appreciate any help on this.

The pac-rt is pretty much a dum device, it does not comunicate with the syntor x on a "data" level. The mods done for the 2 to work together shouldn't cause the problem you are having. The fail 01/90 just means the control head is not talking to the radio.

There is no mod for Pac-Rt use on a Syntor X9000, but there is one for a Maratrac.

If I understand you correctly, you have another X9000 that's in working condition. Try putting the head from your recently acquired unit onto your existing unit, and try it. You won't need to reprogram anything; the mode names won't be correct, but it doesn't matter for the purpose of this test. If you get another 01/90, the head most likely has a problem, if not, the head is probably good.

Next, try replacing your existing drawer with the "new" one, with a known good head. Again, the mode names on the control head may not match, but it doesn't matter. If you get an 01/90, the drawer most likely has a problem, if not, the drawer is probably good.

Last, try subbing the "new" control cable between your existing drawer and existing head. If you get an 01/90, the cable most likely has a problem, if not, its probably good.

If the radio or head individually check bad, you may want to check to make sure that a pin isn't bent or broken where the control cable plugs in to it.
