I'm ready to get one unit to try and I was hoping someone could give me the benefit of their experience. I would like to know what model I should be looking for (in vhf) so I don't buy something I'd regret later. What is the best revision, etc?
This will be mostly for ham use, some sars, and perhaps murs.

well the mt-1000 not much there just how many channels you want if you want mdc-1200 you need the signalling front panel as for revision does not matter

HLA has a point! min. a Ht1000, 16 channels, If you need more channels you can get an Mt2000 up to 160 channels, both take the same rib to radio cable, both take the same batteries.... depends on what the application is for? Hi, Ok, I was waitng for someone to catch my sig, but I have (4) HT1000s now, I just want to get at least (1) of each Motorola model to fool around with and learn as much as I can about the radio. I *was* being lazy and asking for advice on which model or revision to get as I didn't want to or could afford to buy the "wrong" configuration. Alot of you folks have been into these for years, I have *alot* of catching up to do. I've been buying service manuals, user manuals, theory manuals as fast as I can, just so I could gain the knowledge and experience.

If you want to use the radio for other than ham use... MURS commercial freqs etc, then get a radio that is narrowband capable. MURS is narrowband. MT1000 and earlier HT1000 will not handle narrowband. HT1000s model numbers that end in AN & BN are NOT narrow capable. Models ending in CN or DN are. I would avoid investing monies into wideband only radios. In about a year and a half wideband will go away for commercial use. Government users have until Dec 31 2012. There will be an abundance of wideband radios being discarded over this time. Values will greatly decrease as the narrowband deadline approaches. There may be conversion available for some radios, but this will require more investment and someone to install them.Stick to a newer model radio that will handle 12.5 KHz narrowband emissions.

It was my understanding the two can still interoperate though pl/ctcss might be less reliable.

Ok, I must not be understanding something in the right way. I have a AN HT1000 that has a 12.5 KHz spacing option. How is that any different from my XTS3000, MT2000, or even a DN HT1000 with 12.5KHz spacing?

t2k -- if your asking if a Ht1000 can communicate with a MT1000 yes if its on the same frequency, pl/ctcss ect. its not less reliable.... or is there something else? you can buy the MT1000, program it, post your questions here...I'm sure someone will reply. the above posts about Wideband vs. Narrowband, do you have some questions about that? Without attempting to offer a comprehensive inter-model comparison, there is one limitation of the MT1000 that may affect some users or some use: the MT1000 does not permit "split format" signalling (i.e., PL in and DPL out or vice versa), though it does permit "split tone" signalling (i.e., one PL in and a different PL out or one DPL in and a different DPL out).

I have had both an MT1000 and HT1000 . NO doubt that the MT is a solid radio and is great workhorse. But, The MT is getting old and original Motorola parts and accessories are going to get harder to come by. The HT1000 has more accessories and parts and the later CN/DN are narrowband. You can pick up a decent HT for $150ish with accessories.

Unless you have a need more than 16 fr I would go with the HT
