How to scan talkgroup

I have some question regarding scanning in trunking talkgroup (SmartNet)
Take an example, I have 10 talkgroups in scan list, then open automatic scan for detecting the activities on those 10 talkgroup. But as I know if those talkgroups aren't assiged channel, they are still those talkgroups other than channels. Scanning operation only check if carrier come or not to a particular channel, but those talkgroups don't have their own channel, how scan ?
