What CPS version is required for XTS2500, R12 firmware?

I've been on the fence about the Panter XTS2500i's. I'm specifically eying a Model 3 with FPP, 123ABC1234 (aren't they all...), and R12.00.00 host/DSP. My ASTRO CPS is way old (10-series), but I'm new to the XTS2500 line, so I wonder what it takes to program one of these. I seem to recall someone saying that the pre-production XTS2500s required a special CPS; is that still true?
How functional is the radio if I never program it and just use FPP? Or can I not do that at all? I really only need a couple dozen frequencies, no trunking, mix of P25 and analog (with PL).
Oh, and a really n00b question -- I actually searched and didn't find a good answer -- what does the "i" in 2500i denote?

Typically the minimum CPS version is equal to the firmware of the radio... in your case, i would expect to have to use CPS 12.x
the i means intrinsically safe (FM approved)... now i would take this as a grain of salt on a panter radio, it might be, or it might not be.. lol

Just to clarify... for the ASTRO25 platform, the minimum CPS is equal to the firmware of the radio - an R09 radio would have a minimum of R09 CPS, but could be 10/11/12 too.
This is not the case for other platforms.

Actually, it stands for 'immersible' & meets the IP67 specification for water intrusion, not intrinsically safe. Of course the same caveat you mentioned for Panter radios still applies...I wouldn't want to test the immersibility & find out it's just the wrong sticker!

XTS2500i - IP67, 1 meter for 30 minutes at room temperature.
XTS5000R - Mil Std 810C/D/E/F, Method 512.X. 1 meter for 2 hours at 27degC.
No XTS2500R... no XTS5000i. Yes, it's confusing, and it really doesn't make a huge amount of difference.
