motorola xts5000 programming issue

Hi all, I need some help. I'm trying to read my XTS5000 using CPS ver12 and when i click read device after a few seconds a next gen10 box pops up that says "radio Failed To acknowledge Error Context: 24, Status: c0000386". Now i'm using an aftermarket RIBLESS cable from kawa. The radios host version is 08.00.00. Should i be using ver08.00.00 CPS instead of version 12? Any help you guys could give is deeply appreciated. I've been trying to read this radio for hours trying to program it! And yes i have checked the setting on the CPS and it is set to com port 1 and so is the computer so i don't think the com port is the issue because i have programmed other radios using this com port just to make sure it works.

It is almost certainly your cheap aftermarket cable. Get an OEM cable. Dont chance bricking your expensive radio with that KAWA cable. Are you sure its even the cable for the 5000 and not the 3000 and MTS2000?

I'll help you out by seconding Jasons suggestion... Dump that cheap aftermarket cable, and buy an OEM cable.. As you can see for yourself by reading around, you're not the only one that has the same issues with junk aftermark program cables for Astro25 products.

Well all, I just purchased an OEM USB programming cable (RKN4105A) for the XTS5000 and I am waiting for it so I will see if this is will be the answer to reading my radio. you all seem to think so I trusted your guys opinons and bought one. Thanks for the help and i'll let you all know what happens. Any of you guys have the USB cable? Any problems with it? Is it better than the serial cable? Does it need to have drivers installed to work? Does it come with a drivers disk?

Here's the deal, if you have one or a handful of radios then having the USB vs the serial ribless isn't going to make much of a difference. BUT, if you're in my situation with over 600 handheld units and you ever have to do a mass reprogramming you'd be glad you had that USB cable. it takes cloning time down to a few seconds using clone express. The drivers for the radios on a USB connection are loaded when you install the CPS, and the first time you connect a radio you'll get the standard "found new hardware" from windows (XP anyway). If you're running Vista or some other OS, do some searching around here and see what kind of problems you might run into, save yourself a few headaches later.

I will have to echo that this is a programming cable issue, having been through the same issue here. I have also seen this error pop up when there is no programming cable at all attached, or if I was trying to use a RIB/XTS3000 cable by mistake. Hopefully getting a real XTS5000 programming cable will help you.

It seems the ribless Kawa astro 25 cables do not work at all anymore for whatever reason. I had one that seemed to work fine about a year ago and then got suddenly intermittent and then just basically stopped. I bought another and found it's the same way. It seems to vary a bit from radio to radio too. Sometimes one cable would work with the 5k other times the 2500 would work only with the second cable. There seems to be no reasoning for it and I haven't been able to trace what the problem is yet other than it's just cheap crap that should be avoided at all cost.
I have not seen this issue with the 3k cables. They seem to work just fine.

Yeah i never got my kawa cable to read my radio at all. And than i went and bought one from Wiscomm because i thought it might be better because it looked a litter better built on the website and cost alittle more, but when i got it it looked just like the cheap crappy kawa cable and had the same result which was the radio failed to acknowlegde error. So i just bought the OEM USB cable for the XTS5000 so i am waiting for it to arrive and hopefully it will work! Anyone out there use the USB programming cable for the XTS5000? Any issues at all with it?

Is there a little wide spot or box type thing in line in that cable or is it simple a wire? I'm curious if there is a USB chip of some sort in line in those.

Glad it worked for you and fortunately the aftermarket cable didn't brick the radio.
Happy programming.

The cable is just straight from the adaptor that connects to the radio. Nothing on the cable line itself.

Well what the hell, wonder why I can't get it to work then?

There's a DS2433 chip inside the accessory connector. When you check continuity with the cable connected to nothing it
appears to be straight through. Once you plug it in the CTS pin (10) becomes active along with the USB lines.
Maybe there is hope for a homebrew serial cable?

There is the possibility that the cable doesn't like the USB port your trying to use. I know on the
laptop I use, there are 4 USB ports. I have to make sure the port I use is the same one in both
locations. The other ports will not program the radio.
Not saying this is your issue, but it may be worth trying a different port to see if it makes a difference.

I don't want to get mancow's hopes up any more than I already have. But I doubt this will help him. Ground, USB- and USB+ are all straight through. USB 5v goes to the DS2433 chip which has specific code programmed in it by Motorola. The data is then sent on the CTS pin. I can't tell specifically how the chip is wired as the circuit board is muti-layered.
