I have a batch of 5 CP125 portables from a local VFD that are displaying EEP ERR. I can read/write to the radios just fine, but cannot get past the EEP ERR displayed on the front of the radio.

In looking in the CPS, these radios appear to have a model number corruption, as I see garbage characters in the first 4 or 5 positions of the model number.

Trying to clone a known good radio to a bad one doesn't work, as I get "Model Mismatch" or something to that effect.

Anyone have any thoughts on how to recover these radios, or have any suggestions? Motorola Support was of no use (as usual), and the agency really cannot afford to send these cheapie radios in for repair.

how or when did all of this happen? are they still under warranty?

They're all out of warranty, that I'm sure of. It just happened over the course of normal use - there is no physical damage, they just up and quit.

This isn't the first time I've seen this either. I have a UHF unit that's been kicking around the shop for the last three years that has the same problem.

I normally do not work on equipment this low-tier, so I don't have a clue where to begin.

i think you hit it on the head, they need to upgrade radios. i know i wouldn't want to trust my life to that radio

Well.. if the CP is any relation at all to the export model GP68, that particular error code and described symptoms mean only one thing:

Firmware failure. Install new firmware chip.

It'll read/write to the EEPROM, but there is a problem in the 'control' chip.

Do a search on EPP ERR, there is a guy in India I think that had the upgraded chips for the DIY guy.

You must take the Alpha Tuner software from MOL.
Read all the parameters one by one, without written to the radio.

If it still fails, read all the parameters of a normal radio, save in the format *. eep
Then write the data (*. eep) radio to the problem earlier.

Making your error radio maybe work, but now grossly mis-aligned...?

Yeah, my bad... just saw 'copy a new set of parameters'.... it's late... LOL.

Anyone know if that works for the GP68 radio? I'm thinking there is no way to read those params on the 68...?

You have a small board on top of the motherboard, sometimes the screws are loose, this lets the card move and gives this error, most of the time the prosser is bad on these units.
