I see cautions about trying to upgrade an XTS2500 with 4 meg memory higher than 9.something. Is there a simple way to distinguish 4 meg XTS2500s from 8 meg XTS2500s?

Service mode will tell you. For the XTS-5000s, power on and immediately press the lower side button (2 dots) 5 times. The radio cycles through host, dsp versions, algorithms (if installed), model and serial number, etc, etc. Eventually, it'll show 4 meg or 8 meg. I assume the 2500s have a similar function built in, but I'm not sure what button combinations to press.

//ADDED// Not really a warning per se, it's just the R10 and better firmware won't fit in a 4MEG board, not enough memory, so you can use the latest CPS version, but R9 and older firmware are all that you'll ever fit into that radio.

The AN at the end of the model number indicates a 4 meg, and a BN is an 8 meg. There is nothing wrong with upgrading a 4 meg with current firmware.. The cvn firmware files for PR1500, MT1500, XTS1500, and XTS2500 contains the 4 meg firmware and the 8 meg firmware. When you go to upgrade, it upgrades the radio accordingly.

Due to memory limitations, 4Meg radios can not accommodate the size of R10 and beyond Host firmware. Here is a small chart just incase anyone is wondering what the latest 4Meg host is, or how it has progressed beyond R09. As time goes on, the 4Meg release will continue to be upgraded with applicable defect repairs, but no new features will be added.

Also another indication is the physical case. There are no indents around the number keys on the 8mb (B Revision), they are flat fronted like the XTS5000. The 4MB radios (A Revision) have the finger grips.

Can anybody show these differences on photos? I found about 5 big pictures of XTS2500 photos, but all looks identically (I see indents around numeric keys).

For e.g.:

First photo looks like a Panter88 radio - I would rely on his auction listings that say 4 vs 8mb. The housings can be swapped, but a 4mb chassis won't fit an 8mb case quite right, You have to shave two tabs (or it's the reverse... I can't remember)

The second is a 4mb.

The third is a 8mb.

You sure? I see indents around numeric keys on all these photos. Just add brightness and look attentively at right side of keypad on 3-rd photo.

Nope, that's an 8mb radio. Maybe your thinking of the little bump in the back which I think is just the battery.



Those are all 4MB XTS2500 platform radios.

Its not divits around the keys, its divits on the side of the case, to the left and right of the keys, like finger grips. But that is not a good indication of a 4meg an or a 8 meg bn model. The bn case fits on an models just fine i'm pretty sure, its the bn that doesn't fit into an an just right.

Here's a good example of an 8mb case although a small file...



Note the lack of "finger grips" on the side.

Another good thing to look for is the round speaker bottom on the AN housing vs the square shaped speaker bottom of the BN...

Good that you brought that up, I always wondered why some 2500 speaker grills are squared and other ones are rounded.

Year, and rubber keypads differs. Pay attention to inscriptions on keys.
