I am both new to this form and new to two way road radios. I have a truck that came with a Motorola MCX 1000 two way radio which was used in the bush on logging roads etc. When it is turned on the LED face displays the message I/O TEST and nothing further happens. The truck was from up north and is now in the south western part of B.C. Canada. This model was made for the Canadian market and I am told it is 10-20 years old. What is an I/O Test? Any help form anyone is more than welcome!

Regards,
Jim

Welcome, good part is your not getting a error message but sounds like it's hanging up in power up self test. 1st thing to check is the power cables, perhaps when the last user got rid of the vehicle they cut the power cable but the ignition sense line is still intact ?
Don't think the MCX1000 was specifically targeted for the Canadian market , had one in a agency vehicle here in the US. Your probably looking at a 20-25 year old radio and they're quite decent.

The MCX1000 was made for the Canadian market and only made in Canada.

Made for the Canadian market, but I heard they were also used by some federal agencies in the US....

Great radios, I still have a couple remote mount MCX's kicking around, the RCMP here still use them in their patrol vehicles, even new builds that come on will still get MCX1000's installed, they must have somewheres near 6-700 in service here to this day...

I just noted that the LED reads "SELF TEST" then a few seconds later switches to "I/O TEST". I'll check the wiring in the AM and post a follow-up.

Jim

Radio was manufactured in Canada but saw use all over North America.

I just gave up my last box of MCX1000 parts last week to somebody looking for a part. Checked one of the boards and the date code was 1986.

The radios suffered from poor interboard connections. A good cleaning of all contacts might solve your problems.

Thank you so much to all who replied to my posting. I had a better look today and noted that the model number is MBD43UAX7H00AK. I'm not sure how many channels this model has. Although I have not looked inside I did remove and then reinstalled the speaker plug, mic plug, power wires (black and red) and the antenna. Unfortunately the unit still reads "SELF TEST" followed by "I/O TEST". Has anyone who has had or still has one of these units ever had an "I/O TEST" displayed? and if so what was the problem? Thanks again!
