XTL5000 O5 cps problem

Everytime I try to go to read my XTL5000 VHF O5 remote mount radio I get this error in the CPS.

Connection Error
Error Context: 24, Status: 80004005

I am using a legit copy of CPS 12 and the radios HOST and DSP is R120000.

Also using an OEM GCAI USB cable.

I always use the same USB port on the laptop and the device manager on windows xp shows everything working. Now when I do get it to work right I can unplug the cable from the pc and plug it back in and it will work fine. I shut down the computer and i have to fidget with eveything for quite awhile to get it to work again. Anyone else have this same problem? I tried to search but its broken.

The CPS can be some what finiky on some computers. I* have had that problem at times and have had to shut
the radio off and then turn it back on with the program cable disconnected. then connect the cable. You should
hear a couple of tomes come from the computer when it does work.

Another comment I will make is the program may not always work on all of the USB ports on the computer. I do
know that my laptop will not communicate with the radio from 2 of the USB ports. You might want to try another
port. Do not have the radio connected to the cable and plug the programming cable into another port. Windows
will probably give you a message that it is installing the drivers. Just let it cycle through. It will tell you when
it has finished and accept the port. Make sure you have the program set to a USB connection. If your anything
like me, I am switching back and forth from serial port to USB port cables and forget to check the program to
see which one it is set for. Once you have got this far, then plug the programming cable into the control head.

Are you using a Dell?

There is a known issue with Astro CPS when used with XP running on certain Dell notebooks that will result in the radio being stuck in self test mode after a read or write. The solution in the CPS Read-Me file is to disconnect the programing cable after CPS says the read/write is complete and re-attach the cable for further programing.

My programming computer is a Dell that has this problem. When I read/write an XTL5K with Astro 25 CPS I get the same error message you posted if I do not disconnect/re-connect. Try disconnecting the cable from the radio and re-attaching before subsequent reading/writing, I assume it is the same Dell issue manifesting itself in Astro25.

I have experienced constant problems with the USB connectors on my Dell B1000 Dimension desktop, mostly with the connectors on the back of the unit. I have two other identical units that do not have the problem. Anyone with any ideas I'd like to hear what they are.

I also have a Dell Latitude 600 laptop that has, so far, shown no problems in handling CPS12 for XTS portables, other than it can be very slow.

A great deal of Astro 25 USB functions are wonky at best. My desktop won't read USB flashkeys. I have reinstalled driver upon driver and Motorola's latest suggestion was to reformat. F that. Serial or parallel works fine for me, only time I really love USB is for programming large codeplugs or upgrading firmware. The only other current family besides Astro 25 that I can think of that has 'factory USB support' is TRBO....everything else is serial-only...maybe I am forgetting one somewhere

To follow up with my earlier post, this is what I found in CPS readme files regarding the problems I have had that sound very similar to yours. From the sound of it, moto is telling us to live with it and disconnect after each read/write.

From Astro CPS R05. readme known issues:

7) For particular computer configurations, the radio display may get stuck in
"Self Test" after communicating with the CPS. This especially happens with
Dell Latitude or HP Omnibook laptops running Windows 2000, after
performing a read, write, or clone operation. The CPS operation has been
successful, but the serial port on the computer has not released the
communications line. A quick workaround is to simply disconnect the radio from
the computer for a few seconds. This will allow the radio to reset itself and
return to a normal operating mode. The fix for this issue is extensive, but may
be obtained by contacting the Motorola Customer Support at 888-567-7347.

From Astro25 CPS R12. readme known issues:

6) Very seldom, communication errors might be encountered during radio
read/write, if this happens, reset the radio and try again.

I had the same baffling error issues with my XTL/USB/XP notebook setup. I thought there was either a BIOS issue or a conflicting program. So I created a 10gb bootable partition where I loaded XP Pro and noting else but CPS. Works like a champ. I can't guarantee this will work for everyone.
