Syntor X 9000 programming woes

Morning,

Trying to program an X9000 with an old laptop booted up to the command prompt. I'm hitting the radio because the W9 control head indicates PROGRAMMING but with the radio I get a serial bus failure-busy line locked and with the control head I get unknown eprom size, and I'm not able to manipulate either device. So it acts like it's working, but it ain't.

I don't see enough of these things to be very fluent with them...........what am I missing.....???

First thing I will ask is what RIB are you using?

Second, what clock speed computer are you using? These bad boys like it slow. The slower, the better. I have
been using both a 33 MHz clock and another one with 100 MHz.

There is a program floating around out on the web that you might try using. Go find and dowload "cacheoff.exe"
and start it before you start up the Syntor X9000 program.

Don't forget there are 2 different programs that you need to use. The main one for the radio is "RDPROG.EXE" and
the other one for the control head is "CHPROG.EXE". It is hard to get use to in using the "n" keyboard key to move
around both of the programs. The return or enter key just takes you to the next menu selection, not enter that
selection.

The radios come with a normal 32 channel ability. If you need more, then you will end up replacing the EEPROM
in the radio with a 2864. They are available from a number of parts places. Think that the last order I got was
from Digi-Key.

Depending on which control head you have, you may or may not have to do surgery on it for additional channels.
Do a search on the web for the model control head you have for the information.

You will also need to obtain a different version of the programming software to go above the 32 channels.

Thanks for responding, James.

I've dusted off the old 486 and I am able to talk to the radio now, and the HCN1033 W9 control head. I get "unknown eprom size" when I try to talk to an HCN1073 W9 control head, however. As I understand it, both are Syntor control heads. The 33 is a 32 mode version and the 73 is the 64 mode version.

NOW what am I missing.........???

You need to write down just how many channels your trying to use. If your going over 32 channels, you will have to
open up the 1033 head and make some mods. The EEPROM will have to be replaced with the 2864 EEPROM. Then
you will have to change the JU4 and JU5 surface mount zero ohm jumper.

I am making a guess here that the 1073 head didn't come with the radio. Put the 1033 head on the radio and read
it with the CHPROG.EXE program. Shut the radio off, change the head to the 1073 and turn it back on. Then write
to the head with the info that is still in your computer. I think it is the "P" key. That should get you working with
what is in the working head. Then you end up with both heads with the same info. At least it shows you both heads
are working. The 1073 could have come from a regular Spectra.

Thanks Jim, for helping me with this MADDENING nonsense!

This fleet is a mixed bag. All radios have 27 channels, but some have 64 channel control heads. I'm trying to make them all read the same.

I can read the 1033, and when I connect up a 1073 and try to program it I get a verification error.

You might try starting the CHPROG on the 1073 and then try to create a new 2K load into it. It might be
stuck in some unknown world. Once you have created the 2 K load, put one or 2 channels into it. Then
write to the head. If that works, shut the radio down, swap out the heads and then go read the 1033.
Shut the radio down, swap to the 1073 and then write to it. It should take it with no errors.

Other than that, I am a loss how to get around the issue.

Is there a way to program a rear CH (1073) when I don't have a dual CH setup? The rear CH works on the radio as a front CH, but I can't program it.

How are you trying to program the head?

There are 2 different programs that are used on this radio. The "RDPROG " is for the radio only. You need to use CHPROG" to be able to do anything with the
control head.

My problem is that I keep forgetting to use the "N" key to advance to the next window in the program. Too use to the newer software.
