GP68 Low Battery Alert Question

I have a VHF GP68 that has an annoying low battery alert that beeps even when the battery is fully charged. Is there a setting that can lower the parameters to this alert or to shut it off? I don't understand why this does this with new fully charged batteries. Can anyone shed light on this? I use a 2100mAh Nickel Metal Hydride battery and a 600mAh Ni-Cd battery on it. Also I just bought a new charger from W&W that charges both NMH and Ni-CD batteries.

Are the batteries motorola or aftermarket. I've had a few aftermarkets that give the same symptoms even when fully charged. Also I'd ditch the W&W for a motorola charger.

The nickel metal hydride battery is aftermarket but the ni-cad is Motorola. From what I have been able to find that the W&W charger is what I needed to charge my nickel metal hyrdide battery. It has a slower and longer charging process which is what I prefer for my batteries. The Motorola one I have and others I've seen are quick chargers and also are not suited for nickel metal hydrides.

It could be something with the battery setting. You can go into the programmers menu and fiddle with the battery settings. theres a selection for alkaline, nicad, and something else I think. You might have one of the settings off and therefore not registering. if that doesn't work then you can just reset

Turn onto Special Programming Mode

Turn down to Set Battery Saver Status

(‘Off’, ‘Normal’
or ‘Enhanced’)

Set Battery Type
‘Alkaline’ or ‘NiCd’

That might do the trick if you haven't already

FWIW, many of us on this Board consider nicad and NiMH batteries to be chargeable in the same chargers. Lithium-ion batteries require a separate (or a tri-chem) charger but the relatively small differences in charge characteristics of nicad vs. NiMH units are such that the same charger can be used for both types of batteries.

I have tried all of the Battery saving settings, set it for Nicad (There is only two settings for the batteries. Nicad and alkaline) No setting for Nickel Metal Hydride. I even get it with the original Motorola Nicad that is new. I saw on another forum that there is a setting in the firmware to adjust the low voltage alarm parameters but I don't know where I would fine a place with software that would allow adjustments to this settings. Any suggestions?

You will not find any settings specifically for NiMH batteries. Charge the NiMH as you would
a nicad. You might also do a search on the Board about this subject which may convince you
that you're getting good advice on this matter.

Thanks Tom. Does anyone know about the firmware where you can lower the battery alert parameters? I am currently cycling my batteries. Charge fully then discharge fully for several cycles to see if this helps. Both batteries are new. However as we all know even though they are new it depends on how long they have been sitting on a shelf.
