Came across a few CDM's in the last little while that had a option board in them, the option board is the same board that HT1250's have in them for touch tone in the front cover, the ones in the CDM's even have the keypad lights that the HT1250 boards have....
Whats the point of this?

Well, if it's a LS+, that would be the Passport option board. It mounts to the lid of the radio with a ribbon cable. When I changed mine out, it was as you described, a DTMF keypad with backlights. I think they are just using the board for the Passport logic, hence the reason that you need to use separate CPS to program them which is a PITA in my opinion.

The passport board for the CDM series and the HT series radio is the same board. Only issue is that once that board has been initialized to a specific type (mobile vs portable) it can no longer be switched back and forth and work. This is why you have a keypad and backlights on the board.
Also, the initialization is not something that the tech or user does it happens automatically once the board is powered up inside of a unit.
Other boards available for the CDM's are voice storage boards and for the portables man down boards. Plus I'm sure transcript intl has scrambler boards that will also fill that slot.

There are rolling code encryption boards from transcrypt and others, there are also smart trunk boards. You need to look closer at the board and see if there are some number on them. That will tell you what you have.
