Missing pixels JT1000

Post by code »

I have 2 Jt1000,s. I seen the posts about missing pixels. Anyone know of of good and fair dealer where I could get these repaired instead of sending to Motorola? Or can I buy the boards somewhere and do it myself? Or should I just replace these with different ones? I,m open for ideas.. I love my Jt,s. thanks

The problem is with a paper thin flex cable that is themally sealed to the LCD glass and circuit board. It appears that the connections are worked loose over time for whatever reason. Nobody seems to have come up with a way to fix these yet and it's not a matter of replacing a part since the LCD attaches directly to the circuit board that comprises the entire display/keyboard assembly. It's the same issue with the HHCH astro microphones as well.

I saw another post that covered this issue beyond the one for missing pixels. I've also tried the method that was suggested. If you are having massive pixel loss and can handle have some minor loss then I'd try the method that I saw.
I'll describe how I did it so you don't have to look it up. Keep in mind my heat gun is 1500 watts which blows away most hair dryers but a hair dryer should do the trick.

Step 1: Disassemble the unit and remove the flex from the cover keeping the flex on the display. I found that I didn't have to remove it to get some improvement. Also make sure you have some sort of smoth hard piece of metal. I used the end of my dental pick.

Step 2: Heat up the glue joints at the board trying not to heat it for so long that the plastic on the display begins to melt. I didn't melt my plastic even with Big Red so I doubt you'd have that problem with a hair dryer. They key here is to cause the glue to begin to soften up just enough to work with.

Step 3: Right after you remove the head begin to smooth out the joints to the board where the flex meets the board. Continue to smooth the whole strip until you are satisfied that the glue has rehardened.

Step 4: Plug the flex into the controller board and test out your display. If it's not to your liking you can try the process again and see if you get more improvement. Keep in mind that there is a similar row of glue just under the lens for the display which can cause the same problem as well.

I did this process to a board I'd say 4 times. If it was my radio I was working on I would have probably been satisfied after doing this process 2x. However there were still 2 lines that were intermittent and I could not give that back to the customer.

This is not a perfect process but for the cost I'd say it beats the high price of a new display board. And yes there is a company that thus far has done a fantastic job of fixing the displays I've sent them. However the turn around time is rather high.

I've been working on the astro HHCH the entire evening but things keep getting worse. I have a heat gun but it doesn't seem to do anything but worsen the problem. I thought the problem was constrained to the area where the ribbon meets the PC board but it seems it's an issue with the LCD connection point as well. I've tried varying levels of heat from minimal to the point that the ribbon appears to be almost melting. At one point I lost everything and it appears that it involves the connection at the LCD. I can't seem to get enough heat or the right amount of heat and pressure in the right places long enough to get anything to adhere.

This is one of the more frustrating things I've ever worked on. It just doesn't seem to make much sense. :x
