Ok, I have a silly question that's been bugging me for some time. I have a few GP300's and GP350's, but one keeps on attracting my attention. For some reason, this one has a very shiny gold back underneath the battery, as opposed to silver. Does this mean anything at all, or is it just one of the colors that were made? Just seems kind of strange that this is the only radio I have like this.

I have no idea, but if you see Indiana Jones palming a bag of sand while eyeing your golden radio, I'd step out of the way of the big boulder that's heading your direction. I'm just saying, you know ...

I have had literally hundreds of GP350's come by me over the years, and I have never seen a golden back cover on one...

Kinda looks a silver back one that ozidized. If you have some metal polish give it a dab, will probably come off. I saw a Triton
(marine portable based on the GP300) that went for a swim, in the areas that it wasn't corroded it kinda had a similar film on the metal.

My GUESS is that, for a while, Motorola used a different vendor for their back covers and that vendor used a slightly different plating alloy. Back in the day, GE also switched from a bright metal (chrome like) plating to one with a decidedly yellow cast to it on their Progress Line radios. An easy way to tell if you had a later model chassis but NO other significance.

I'm really not thinking its oxidation, it's a nice smooth gold surface. I was just wondering if it was anything special, like non-sparking or something like that (explosive atmospheres, I know a long shot) I guess the mystery will live on, just like the huge rock ball that's chasing me now

no, it's the Austin Powers Goldmember GP350...

Nothing special as far as I remember?I used to work for a film industry two way radio rental house and we had some new GP350 that had that "shiny gold"metal chassis.

Yeah,it was not oxidation since we broke them out of the box new if I remember correctly with that gold backing.
