You have to use a hex editor to open the file. Are you trying to use one, and if so, which one?

i downloaded hex workshop from the link on the batlab maratrac page. when i try to open the maratrc2.ovl file it gives me an error message. i guess a better question is does the editing have to be done in dos also?
thanks again

No, the editing doesn't have to be done is DOS. It really doesn't matter what OS you use, as long as you have a hex editor that will run under that particular OS. My next question for you is: exactly how are you trying to open the file with Hex Workshop (exact method you are trying to use)? Also, have you tried opening any other files with Hex Workshop? You should be able to open practically any file, no matter what the extension, with Hex Workshop. If it will open other files, then I have to wonder if your copy of the maratrc2.ovl file is corrupted. Does the Maratrac RSS run properly in its "stock configuration"?

i have not tried to open any other files with it yet. the rss works fine in it's stock configuration. i am new to the hex editing and the program is saying the extension is not supported or corrupt. with it working i figured it would be more likely not supported rather than corrupt. but i knoww there has to be a way to do it.

Extension not supported? That's a new one on me. I've opened files with several dozen different extensions, including .ovl, with Hex Workshop and never incontered a problem like that. I have to guess its a change they've made to later versions. Which version are you using? The newest version I've ever used is 4.23, and, as I said, I've never ran into such a problem. Drop me an email (my addy is "encoded" in my signature), and I can send you the installer for version 4.23. If that won't open it for you, we'll see where to go from there, but I'm pretty sure that will take care of the problem for you. 8)

got it done..... i had to drag the maratrc2.ovl file into the hex editor and it opened right up. searched and changed the necessary bits and then tried it out. the rss accepted the frequency over 50 without a problem. tomorrow will be the day for programing and the start of mods to get it running there.

Did you have to use the software I sent you (for the mods, no, it wasn't RSS 8) ), or did you get the one you were already trying to use to work for you? Either way, I'm glad to hear you got it working like you wanted it to.

i used the older hex you sent although i probably could have used the new trial version. i was trying to import the file into the editor. it was when i dragged it into the open editor it came right up.
thanks again

Interesting. There should have been a "hex edit with hex workshop" option added to your right-click context menu in Windows. Just go to any file you want to hex edit, right click on it, and select the "hex edit" option from the menu. You don't even need Hex Workshop opened beforehand.
