Can you update the firmware in a xts3000 to a newer one? I have flashcode 58 and was wondering if i could get a newer flashcode for more features?

Firmware and flashcode are two different things.
Firmware is the radio's basic operating system, e.g., 12.01.00 or similar dot-separated number sequence.
Flashcode is the radio's installed feature set, always thirteen digits, such as 000000-000000-0. Your mention of "flashcode 58"
does not make any sense.
The answer to your firmware updating question is yes, customarily done by a service shop.

First of all, if you haven't done so, read your radio's flashcode and then decode it so you can see what you have and thereby what you may need. Use this site: http://www.akardam.net/moto/tools/decod ... =flashcode. Parts of this site contain, for example, a complete list of flashcodes, some of which will probably interest you while at the same time many probably won't mean much to you.
Then, read your radio for its current firmware version. The earlier the firmware, the fewer flashcode functions the radio can use, which is why it usually pays to have a radio with older firmware updated to newer firmware which will enable you to put in more, newer, and maybe better flashcode features. Please note carefully my use of the words "flashcode" and "firmware" here, because they are not the same, as you know, but are definitely closely related. Eventually, should you decide that your radio needs to be upgraded or reprogrammed in some way, you will need help from a service shop. Some individuals can do this kind of work but persons with total capabilities equal to a service shop are not all that common.

Newer or older makes no difference. A flashcode is a set of features that will work in your radio, and as was stated previously are controlled as to availability by the host and DSP (firmware) in your radio. If you list the radio's host and DSP then someone here can probably give you some idea of what the limitations of your radio are. You might also want to do some research on the subject of Motorola flashcodes so you understand how they're constructed and what exactly the numbers indicate.

If you read the flashcode feature list you'll see that the 5 means enhanced digital display. Now read the host and dsp in the radio FROM the radio itself, not from the CPS. Do this by turning the radio on and then pressing the front lower side button five times in quick succession. All the specs should read on the screen but you'll have to do this several times as they appear very fast.

Also, be advised that almost any kind of flashcode can be loaded into an XTS, but the host and DSP will govern whether or not various features can actually be used.

You should also be using the search function of this Board as you go through this process because there is a lot of information that you obviously need to get up to speed on before you go much further.

If by alpha tagging you mean you want to alias the digital ID's, your out of luck with the 3000. That feature is not available on any Astro platform regardless of firmware or flashcode. You will have to move up to an Astro25 radio to get that feature.

The Astro25 portables consist of the following:

PR1500
MT1500
XTS1500
XTS2500
XTS4000
XTS5000
SSE5000

Seriously, the best thing would be for you to take a couple hours and search the board.. There is tons of info on here about the Astro platform, the Astro25 platform, Flashcodes and Firmware..
