ok, I have a VHF GP300. The internal microphone is not working at all, but the speaker mic works fine. Is there something blatently obvious or common I should check before I dissassemble the thing?

I had the same problem with a GP300, except it was with internal RX audio.

The jack that the speaker mic plugs into sometimes gets gummed up on the contacts with residue or corrosion.

Still, another problem with microphone audio was solved when it was discovered that the solder that connects the microphone with the flex-line was loose.

You'll want to check both, try opening it up and checking the mic connections first. Worst case scenario is that you'll have to replace the speaker/mic jack.

I just had the exact same problem with mine.. It turned out it was the cheap paperwrapped ribbon cable which connects the internal mic & speaker to the radio. The speakermic worked fine.. they share the same audio circuit, so if the speakermic is working fine, it comes down to the mic itself. The parts were less than 10 bucks... I replaced the cablel & mic & now it works great.

Most of the time this and related audio problems are caused by a bad options (spkr-mic) jack. These are not too easy to change, it is a combination surface mount and thru hole plus you have to remove the RF jack and the monitor button.
The newer jacks are of a much better quality and cost about 17 dollars.
