XTS3000 Programming Issue

Okay, i have an XTS3000 model I 800MHz radio that i cannot get to read with CPS. The radio powers on, appears to pass the self test but when i try to read it, i get a "communication with radio failed" message. An external speaker mic will work on it so the side port seems to work, but I am wondering if it still could be a bad flex assembly. I have tried two different programming cables and get the same results. So my question is could it be a bad flex or something internally wrong with the radio?

I am using CPS 05.02.00.

Any help is appreciated.

Where did you get your RIB and your programming cable? Have you used the RIB to program other radios? While it MIGHT be an internal flex problem within the radio the odds are better that the problem is in the programming setup.

The RIB is OEM and so is the cable, i know they both work, i just tested them on another radio.

If you have an extra front housing that is known to be good, try swapping it out. That should tell you if it's the flex or housing that is at fault.

If you just tested them (RIB, Cable) prior on another radio, that should rule out the wrong com port selected...Sounds like an internal problem

Yeah ive pretty much ruled its a problem with the radio, i'm just debating on spending the dough on a new housing/flex, as i don't have another housing to test it with, i am hoping that's the issue, any other ideas of what could be wrong internally?

Just recently picked up a used XTS3000 Model II and received the same error message. My programming setup works quite well on my other two XTS3Ks and had me baffled. My first thought was the flex also. Yanked the old one and put in a new one fresh out of the cling free bag. Same error. Tried MTSX lab and ASTRO lab with the same results. Pulled out the service manual and started tracing the only four leads from the accessory connector on the case to the controller board used for programming by my ribless cable(s). Only three had continuity. It appears that whoever programmed the radio last or decom'd it clipped the bottom contact finger from the accessory connector on the inside of the case off so that when the flex is installed under the retainer there is no contact between it and the case assembly. I'm still waiting on my new case to arrive from PANTER88 in Hong Kong. This radio came from the state of Ohio and was (is) still programmed. Perhaps the sysop didn't want anyone tampering with or reading his setups.

Many times, the error is simply how the programming adaptor attaches to the side connector.
If the alignment is off enough, the pins do not make proper contact and the radio is unable to read the data.

Make sure the side connector is clean and shiny, as well as the pins on the programming cable.

Oxide buildup will introduce a higher impedance to the ACCY. connector and cause errors also.
