I just started having a problem with my laptop and trying to program analog spectras. I'm using a laptop with Windows 98 SE and RSS R06.00.05 (3-June-93) I am getting a RIB power failure error. I am the only one that has programmed this fleet of radios and now I cannot read or write to them. I am thinking that it is a com port issue on my laptop. Can anyone tell me what com port settings I should be using. I am at a loss.
When I try to read the radios they say "Program" for less than a second and then issue an error on my laptop. Any help is appreciated.

Sounds like you have a broken cable or a RIB problem.

Try the COMM Test in the setup screen.

Remember RSS has to run in DOS......... REAL DOS.

Im thinkin that maybe the computer is too fast, or its running in a dos box not pure dos as Will says. I have an old win95 machine the I run my spectra from a desktop icon that is attched to the C: command to run from the dos.

I've done it "pure DOS" and "in a box" and it always worked - My RIB appears good I have done other models with no problem - perhaps my cable is the culprit. Are there any com port settings I should have? When I did not have success I started monkeying around with them. I'll see if I can find another cable.

So this RIB and this computer when running in DOS programs other model radios with no problem?

IMO, with ANY RSS, you should be running it in Pure DOS (such as MS-DOS 6.22).

I think by default the FIFO buffers for the Serial port are turned off in DOS, so you should be good there.

Is the RIB for sure getting power during programming?

Make sure in the SETUP screen, the right COM Port is selected. Change it and press F3 to test to see if it is communicating to the radio correctly.

you can try cacheoff.com. This will turn off your L1 cache in DOS. You will notice the RSS runs a lot slower, so you will know it is working. Then see if you can do it.
