on the 16 channel model, (not sure about the 99ch) select the center position of the 3 position switch on top, then press and hold the button above the PTT and while holding, slide the 3 position switch to the scan Z to the right. let go of the button above the PTT and now turn the know to the channel you want to scan, and press the PTT, you will hear a short beep, that added that channel, select the next channel and press the PTT. i think theres a max of 8 scanned channels. when done, click the top 3 position switch to the left, then back to scan and it will now scan.

And on the 99 channel version...

Start off with the three position toggle switch in the center position. While holding down the light button (second button from the top on the side of the radio) put the three position switch into the scan position (the marking that looks like a "Z"). The radio will beep.

Let go of the light button and repress the light button to scroll thru the scan channels which will be shown on the display. To add/change a scan channel, use the channel up/down buttons to scroll to the channel you want to add. When you channel is there, press the PTT button once. The radio will beep and the channel is added top your list. To delete a channel, scroll to the undesired channel using the light button and press the PTT button. The radio will beep and the display will show "00".

When you are all done, move the three position switch back to the center or far left position.

That's it. I still have a 99 channel UHF and VHF MT1000 and think they both out perform some of the newer stuff that is out there.

Yes, eight. Technically nine if you enter eight channels in the scan list and put the radio on a channel not included in the scan list. It would then scan the eight in the scan list and the selected channel.
