MTS2000 FLASHport - any RSS/CPS to avoid??

I have recently acquired a UHF MTS2000 FLASHport radio. The radio is working OK on its original frequencies and appears to be just a conventional radio (no trunking).

The Model number is H01RDD9PW1BN
The serial number is 466AAU3*** Z

From the serial number, the MTS2000 was manufactured in October 2000.

I have previously successfully programmed other Jedi radios and MCS2000 mobiles. However, I have never programmed a FLASHport version.

I am aware that I should NEVER NEVER use LAB RSS!!!! (to avoid toolproofing)

I have no idea which version of RSS/CPS was previously used to program the MTS2000 , so I will need to be aware of "codeplug too new" issues. I plan on initially using DOS RSS - if that fails , then I will move to CPS

However , when I was researching, I read that the latest DOS RSS version , R06.08.00 (dated 2005) does NOT support MTS2000's with "H01....PW...." model numbers ie. like mine. Is this definately the case??

Likewise , CPS version R01.13.00 does not allow the subsequent use of DOS RSS and version R01.10.00 does not allow "inhibited" radios to be programmed.

So I guess I should start with DOS RSS R06.07.00 ,then if I have a "codeplug too new" issue , move to CPS R01.09.00??? Is this correct.

Any other versions of MTS2000 RSS/CPS to avoid?

Thanks

MCS2000's are flashport radios also..

If the radio has firmware R05.42 and above, correct.

Correct.

Try DOS 06.07 first. If that codeplug-too-new's you then go up to CPS. The controller f/w version can be grabbed by putting the radio into test mode - 5 presses of the (..) button shortly after power-on. Your "AU" manufacture date (October 2000) will almost certainly put it into toolproofed territory.

You need RSS 06.07.00 or CPS MTS/MCS 02.02.00
The same radios we are using in Israel especially in army and we are working with mtsx rss 06.07.00

Best regards

Thanks for all the feedback.

My copy of DOS RSS R6.07.00 is missing the MTSX.BAT file.. and others.

I have copyied the MTSX.BAT file from version R06.00.00 and R06.07.00 now runs OK.

My copy of R06.07.00 has the following files:

MTSX.BAT - from R06.00.00
RUNTIME.EXE
MTSX.ODB
MTSX.CFG
MTSX.mim??
MTSXHOPT.MDF

I am also missing the following but could extract them from R06.00.00

UPGRADE/MTSXBOOT.ENC
SRIB/SMARTRIB.ENC

Is it OK to omit the above 2 files as I guess they are only used for firmware updates?? Or should I just copy them from version R06.00.00??

What is the MTSX.mim file ???

I read in the README.TXT , that the following DIRECTORIES should exist:

UPGRADE
SRIB
SYSKEY
ARCHIVE
OFP

Do I need to manually create ALL of these - I was planning on just doing the ARCHIVE subdirectory

I was wrong in thinking that my MTS2000 was only CONVENTIONAL - it also has TRUNKING frequencies installed but I will only be using the MTS2000 as a conventional radio.

I will be using a 16bit PCMCIA SD card reader to transfer the RSS to a 486 Win95/DOS laptop. As the MTSX.ODB files is too big to fit on a floppy, using a PCMCIA SD reader is an "easy" way of transferring "bigger than a floppy" files - avoids using any compression/splitter software!!!

Thanks

Gosh, I just answered this in another post. The real issue is, what version of firmware is currently in the radio. You need to know this *before* you read the radio with Windows CPS. If its version R5.31 or older, *never* connect this radio to WIndows CPS to even just to "read" the radio. CPS will corrupt the code plug in this radio, which the only recourse, is to "clone" the code plug with a same model code plug while in an earlier version of RSS DOS. This is the simpliest way to recover the radio. I lucked out and happened to find some older 1994 code plugs, which I used to clone the radio. Whew!.. It seems that if you have an older firmware, Windows CPS version of MTSX does write to the code plug even if your just reading the radio. Trust me, it does corrupt the code plug!
I've even seen it read the radio with CPS, and then when you go to write the data back into the radio, the error occurs. Now your stuck. RSS won't touch the radio at all, since CPS has written its version into the code plug.
So, do the service trick of pushing the lowest side button 5 times within 10 seconds, read the version of firmware, and then
select the correct RSS / CPS to use. I did also stay away from RSS 6.08, and 6.07, and went with something a tad older, like 6.0 to clone in the radio. If its still acting goofy, go for an even older version of RSS. I guess I was blessed as I had RSS back to version 2 or something like that.

According to Motorola documentation, MTS2000 radios with firmware less than 5.63 should not be written to with CPS 2.02 or later, without first updating the radio using a special standalone update utility. This utility upgrades the radio to 5.65 and thereafter allows the radio to be successfully written with CPS.

If you attempt to write the radio with CPS prior to performing this update, the radio will most likely display a FL 01/82 (EEPROM checksum error, either bad codeplug data or bad EEPROM). This can in some cases be corrected by cloning in a codeplug using DOS RSS, but there are no guarantees. There is nothing in the documentation (nor in my own personal experience) that indicates only reading the radio will cause this failure.

Once the radio has the update applied, it can then be flashed to the latest version using the builtin CPS firmware refresh procedure.

Thanks for the very useful advice.

My firmware version is 5.44

So I should NOT use CPS 2.02 or later (without a firmware update).

My MTS2000 was manufactured in October 2000. I've searched on the Batboard to find issue dates for the DOS RSS as follows:

R06.00.00 (dated 1997)
R06.04.00 (dated Sept 1999)
R06.05.00 (dated Oct 2000)
R06.07.00 (dated Nov 2002)

From the above, I guess my MTS2000 has been programmed with R06.05.00 or later - I have versions R06.00.00 and R06.07.00.

Anybody have any views on the missing MTSX.BAT file from my R06.07.00 version??? Is it OK to use the .BAT file from version R06.00.00?? It seems to run OK. I noticed others were reporting the same error when using R06.07.00 without the MTSX.BAT file (ie. just using RUNTIME.EXE).....so if your version of R06.07.00 does not run, its because the MTSX.BAT file is missing!!!!!!!

SUCCESS!!!! - so far !!

I used DOS RSS R06.07.00 and added the "missing" MTSX.BAT file from version R06.00.00.

I was able to both read and write to the MTS2000.

The radio was last programmed on 0012131115 - I guess this means 13 Dec 2000 at 11.15am ??? - which fits with the Oct 2000 manufacture date.

I used my Win 95 IBM Thinkpad 360CE (486) and created a Startup/Boot disk inorder to boot directly into real DOS.

I needed Win 95 in order to make use of a PCMCIA SD card reader (must be 16bit type which are still sold) - I was then able to copy the "bigger than a 1.4MB floppy" file with no need to resort to splitter software!!

I also checked the BIOS in the Thinkpad (Press F1 and hold while booting up) - the serial port was already activated. However, I did check that the serial port was working OK in DOS by programming another radio before I tried the MTS2000!!!

I now need to work out all the bells and whistles of the MTS2000. I also saved the original codeplug to a floppy (just in case).

I read something about saving an S Record - but I think you need to use LAB RSS to do this ?? Any ideas? I'm reluctant to go near LAB RSS with a FLASHport MTS2000!!!

Thanks
