Folks, I'm still new at this, so please be gentle?
I have both GP380 UHF & VHH. Both are tone board equipted.
How do I turn the DTMF on? I need to send tones for repeater control.
I've been looking and searching, but to no avail.

Milt,

1. First thing to check is that the keypad is turned on in the software. On the newer radios, XTS etc., this would apply. On older HTs with keypads the keypad is usually operable at all times.
2. On an HT you hold down the PTT switch and with another finger or thumb you sequentially operate the keypad, OR, on some HT's just actuating the keypad keys the PTT and sends the tones.
3. On a mobile radio with a keypad microphone the operation of the keypad usually turns on the PTT at the same time, but it may not, in which case you do it the same you do with the older HTs, which means hold down the PTT and operate the keypad.

What I found, using the CPS software is that there's a way to designate what each of the side buttons, and orange button on the top is responsible for.'
There's a drop down menu with what each can be assigned. DTMF was one of the choices. I reprogrammed changed code plug to the radio, and now, when I hit that button, the display shows,"DTMF On". After sending a number of tones, and I'm ready to turn it off, I hit the DTMF button momentarily again, and the display says, "DTMF Off".

I don't recall offhand if my XTS HTs have a DTMF ON/OFF menu selection, but it would seem that absent a really compelling reason the ability to turn the DTMF capability on and off would be a waste of a programmable button function. If you just consider the selection for four buttons (one on top and three on the side) it seems to me that monitor, talkaround, and scan would be three that are necessary, and if you don't need to do emergency on the orange button then you might want to set it for turning the display light on and off. I would think that leaving the DTMF pad operable at all times would make the most sense. I'll look at my XTS selections later tonight just to refresh my memory about this, but your radio is probably a bit different from mine.

On a GP380, this should be something that you will access through the radio menu or program a button for. It is called DTMF mode, and it is something you can toggle on or off from the keypad.
