So my 2500 seems to have the feature set for hardware encrytion. Where in the radio would the hardware board be?

The board is, obviously, inside the radio, and it's at the bottom the unit. You don't need to find it, however, because you can read what type of board it is by turning on the radio and quickly pressing one of the small side buttons (I think it's the one at the bottom of the row but I forget exactly) five times. The board data will read out last, or nearly last, and you'll have to do this operation several times because the data scrolls by pretty fast.

The UCM for the XTS2500 is located on the actual keyboard of the radio. Since there was no expansion slot built in to the actual radio at the start of production they decided to use what they already have. Keep in mind that if you change housings you need to swap that board if the new housing does not have encryption. The board is behind a metal shield which is a great pain in the you-know-what to get out.

So I took out the metal shield and there is nothing under it besides the keyboard, guess there is no hardware encryption.

The keypad board itself contains the UCM, it's not a seperate plug & play board as in the 5K's... Put the radio into service mode, and see if any algo's show up.
