These knobs pull off, if you're strong enough and/or it's "loose" enough. Go easy, whatever you do, and if it won't move under hand/finger pressure get a small screwdriver and gently put it under the knob at one point and rock the blade very slightly. That
should loosen the knob enough to remove it. Reassembly is the reverse, as the English say in their car manuals, except that you
may have to push the knob all the way on to the shaft by pushing the radio with the knob halfway on against something like a
table edge. Again, whatever you do take it easy and move carefully. Do not hammer the top of the knob; it all works fine
eventually by just slow pressure.

Marc,

The volume knob is very easy to remove, I normally use a small plastic stick that are for separating cell phones (we get them from Moto for about .95 cents each, IIRC you can also buy them at Radio Shack) I prefer to use the plastic tool to pry with as it will not scratch the housing like a screw driver will.

The best way I have found is to turn the knob till the switch is in the off position. Then you will want to pry up on the knob from the rear, or 180 degrees from the white line on the knob. I just insert the prying tool under the back of the rubber knob (between the bottom of the rubber knob, and the top of the housing) and it will pop right off. The insert for the volume is also very easy to remove if you don't plan on re-using it. Just pull the two white tabs out so they are no longer locked onto the control shaft. Before you replace the insert be sure the o-ring is in place on the control's shaft.

Be vary careful not to put force on the volume control shaft, this includes pulling up on it. That is a good way to ruing the pot.

If you are just replacing the volume control knob (like just putting on a FDNY knob) there is no reason to even remove the insert. Unless the insert has been damaged and it is loose I would not change it if you don't have to.

See the below link for a PDF that will be of help and has good pictures of the insert replacement.

Jim,

My cautious approach was based on my experience with changing three 5Ks to FDNY knobs, and in all three cases the original knob was a real pain to remove. A 3K might be somewhat different; in any case I'd prefer to be able to pull the old knob off instead of using any tools to do the job.

The FDNY knobs really do a much better job, all things considered.

Regards,

Tom,

Everything you said is right on, I was just adding to it.

The 5000's have the same knob and inset as the 3000's.
