Re: Astro Spectra UHF firmware upgrade Flash unknown error
I have an 800 unit that did pretty much the same thing during a rebanding flash upgrade. I was told that there was a middle of the road vocon, and even though the tag says 1 meg, the radio says unknown in service mode.... blah blah blah, basically it's a send it to the factory to get it fixed.... if they have a vocon.
Kilgore: Smell that? You smell that?
Lance: What?
Kilgore: Napalm, son. Nothing in the world smells like that.
Kilgore: I love the smell of napalm in the morning. You know, one time we had a hill bombed, for 12 hours. When it was all over, I walked up. We didn't find one of 'em, not one stinkin' dink body. The smell, you know that gasoline smell, the whole hill. Smelled like... victory. Someday this war's gonna end...

UNKNWN is typically indicative of a DSP/HOST mismatch or a poorly-hacked codeplug. Sometimes you can rectify that via flash, sometimes not. I'd dump a known-good simple (say P25 conventional) s-rec into it and try flashing it again.

The consolette that I had that issue with, was brand new, it had been sitting on the shelf since the mid 90's, never hacked, as it was from mother m.tvsjr wrote:UNKNWN is typically indicative of a DSP/HOST mismatch or a poorly-hacked codeplug. now being this radio is no longer supported (or is it?) what will they tell me when i send it in to them? sorry we no longer support it? then im back to step 1
I was told that when it is sent in, if they have parts, they will fix it, if they don't, it will get replaced by a XTL consollette. I think that the Astro Spectra is still on the schedule for flat rate, parts availabilty may be another issue.

There's different dates for different bands:
Astro Spectra v/u - 12/31/2010
Astro Spectra 800 - 12/31/2011
That's when support ends. So you can probably flat rate the thing - except I'm pretty sure that it's in the range of $350-$450. I would suggest you just buy another.

Re: Astro Spectra UHF firmware upgrade Flash unknown error
All it needs is a legit FW refresh.
During the process, the CPS/RSS calculates an "Authentication Code" similar to the 01/93 protection on the MTS's. The difference being, the Astro Spectra (etc) is written with the FW whereas the MTS is srecord based. Also, the improper authentication code is not fatal to the operation like the 01/93 is.. The "UKNOWN" is the sign there was a problem with the FW write.
The calculation is based on the ibutton info (serial and "Born-On-Date") If it has issues with them (as you are) that is where the problem lies.
If it IS a firmware refresh you are trying to do, try another ibutton if you have one available.
Good luck

For the last batch of FW revisions, M stated the the "D" revision box is the only one that should be used.
