im always looking for t-band radio's... especially sabers..
Re: smallest uhf radio?
Visar with slim battery= very small. 16 channels max. Some will day there are durabilty issues due to the way the controller is afixed directly to the housing, but if your friend is using it for a relatively "lightweight" application, and he gets a "DN" revision radio (thicker controller board) he should be happy. However this is a discontinued radio- not sure what he didn't like about the EX though
Re: smallest uhf radio?
he had a fat battery on it.... maybe if he chooses a slim battery.. it said it was heavy.....
does the xts4000 do conv? and is it available in that band split?
he has no budget..skys the limit....

Heretical statement: Have your friend take a look at the Vertex 820; it's pretty small as commercial HTs go.

tom, tried he didnt like it.. he also had a vx-800, didnt like it........ he is very picky.. he is looking for something on the lines of a small frs radio that can work on uhf t band, im going to try and convince him to get a minitor V , since he is only listening to his workers and not actually talking..... and when he needs to talk he can use his regular ex600

Re: smallest uhf radio?
How about the Icom F60 with a stubby antenna?
The bandsplit is only a suggestion.
Re: smallest uhf radio?
Or try this one on for size.
http://www.titanradio.com/docs/Complete.pdf
4.9 oz and a little over 4 inches tall
The TC320 above is smaller than my previous Nextel phone
Smaller than some or most FRS at Best Buy

Re: smallest uhf radio?
I don't know if Motorola ever made a XTS4000 UHF in the 450-520MHz" S" split?I could be wrong but I think the XTS4000 only comes in Q split for UHF???

Re: smallest uhf radio?
Not to beat the subject to death, but I have a Yaesu FT60R that does T-band receive, all the way to 520 mHz, just fine. I discovered this when my local RS replaced their lowband squad radio with a 488 mHz system a couple of years ago and the FT60 receives it just fine with good sensitivity. The radio will NOT transmit up there, even though it's been "out-of-banded" for more conventional ranges. If you were to put a stubby (i.e., Maldol 209A) antenna on it you'd have a real pocket radio with a short antenna.

Listen only, NO problem...the Yaesu VX3R is the hands down winner.
This radio does UHF through T band, as well as all P.S. frequencies, PLUS you can listen to WWV @ all frequecies as well.
Radio sold for under $170.00, standard stubby dual band antenna, Li-Polymer battery and wall wart.
Good rcvr, TX @ 100mW or 1W with standard battery, more if using DC power.
LCD, backlit, does narrowband(half dev.) as well as 12.5 kHz steps to 50 K steps.
Shirt pocket size, under 4" height, 2-1/8" wide, 1-1/8" thick(visual dimensions).
Also has stereo RX when in BC band, SMA-F antenna port.
Cute covert radio...I doubt anybody would know you are listening.

Re: smallest uhf radio?
Ernest,
You are dead-right about the VX3; I saw one at a ham breakfast a couple of years ago and I could not believe now small it was, about half the size of the FT60R. I guess all of the "more modern" Vertex ham HTs do T band, judging by what you wrote about the 3 and what I found out about the 60.
Regards,

Re: smallest uhf radio?
the 2 was better, it was easy to mod to transmit on t band, i do not think they 3 can do ti

Re: smallest uhf radio?
Remove the battery on the VX3, there is a black vinyl cover over the 'hole', under which, you will see a single resistor....cut the trace, or simply remove that component...All done...TX up through 470 mHz.nypd wrote:the 2 was better, it was easy to mod to transmit on t band, i do not think they 3 can do ti

Re: smallest uhf radio?
The 185 is a 480 mHz radio.
The 40 is a 470 mHz radio.
The Titan TR200 is a 470 mHz radio.
None of these radios meets the OP's stated requirement which is 490 mHz.

Re: smallest uhf radio?
I am going to second the Visar with the slim battery. They were great little radios, and can be had dirt cheap these days. Batteries are easily obtainable, and it will cover 450-520 in the right band split. With a stubby antenna, these disappear right into a pocket. I have seen them for $25 on Ebay recently.
