Visar with slim battery= very small. 16 channels max. Some will day there are durabilty issues due to the way the controller is afixed directly to the housing, but if your friend is using it for a relatively "lightweight" application, and he gets a "DN" revision radio (thicker controller board) he should be happy. However this is a discontinued radio- not sure what he didn't like about the EX though

Heretical statement: Have your friend take a look at the Vertex 820; it's pretty small as commercial HTs go.

How about the Icom F60 with a stubby antenna?
The bandsplit is only a suggestion.

I don't know if Motorola ever made a XTS4000 UHF in the 450-520MHz" S" split?I could be wrong but I think the XTS4000 only comes in Q split for UHF???

Not to beat the subject to death, but I have a Yaesu FT60R that does T-band receive, all the way to 520 mHz, just fine. I discovered this when my local RS replaced their lowband squad radio with a 488 mHz system a couple of years ago and the FT60 receives it just fine with good sensitivity. The radio will NOT transmit up there, even though it's been "out-of-banded" for more conventional ranges. If you were to put a stubby (i.e., Maldol 209A) antenna on it you'd have a real pocket radio with a short antenna.

Listen only, NO problem...the Yaesu VX3R is the hands down winner.
This radio does UHF through T band, as well as all P.S. frequencies, PLUS you can listen to WWV @ all frequecies as well.

Radio sold for under $170.00, standard stubby dual band antenna, Li-Polymer battery and wall wart.
Good rcvr, TX @ 100mW or 1W with standard battery, more if using DC power.
LCD, backlit, does narrowband(half dev.) as well as 12.5 kHz steps to 50 K steps.

Shirt pocket size, under 4" height, 2-1/8" wide, 1-1/8" thick(visual dimensions).
Also has stereo RX when in BC band, SMA-F antenna port.

Cute covert radio...I doubt anybody would know you are listening.

Ernest,

You are dead-right about the VX3; I saw one at a ham breakfast a couple of years ago and I could not believe now small it was, about half the size of the FT60R. I guess all of the "more modern" Vertex ham HTs do T band, judging by what you wrote about the 3 and what I found out about the 60.

Remove the battery on the VX3, there is a black vinyl cover over the 'hole', under which, you will see a single resistor....cut the trace, or simply remove that component...All done...TX up through 470 mHz.

The 185 is a 480 mHz radio.
The 40 is a 470 mHz radio.
The Titan TR200 is a 470 mHz radio.
None of these radios meets the OP's stated requirement which is 490 mHz.

I am going to second the Visar with the slim battery. They were great little radios, and can be had dirt cheap these days. Batteries are easily obtainable, and it will cover 450-520 in the right band split. With a stubby antenna, these disappear right into a pocket. I have seen them for $25 on Ebay recently.
