MTS2000 VHF "doesn't support 2.5KHz spacing"

I have an MTS2000 VHF, factory radio, made in 1999 per the serial number (466AZYxxxx). It's a 512K controller, all boards match, yet when programming with CPS R02.03, I get an error when writing:

"Target Radio does not support 2.5KHz spacing. Upgrade radio firmware"

well here's the deal, it has current firmware, 8.73!
I've programmed MTS2000 VHF portables with OLDER firmware and not seen this message. Is this some form of codeplug corruption? Seems like the CPS is saying the hardware isn't capable. Funny thing is if I change the bandwidth to 4.0KHz it accepts those 2.5KHz spacing frequencies (such as 151.2575) just fine.

Ideas anyone?

Never seen that error, but I wasn't trying to plug in the V-Tac channels. Let me play around and see what I get when I get back to the shop.

Dumb question, does it work with 2.5KHz deviation?

I think that is the problem, when I select 2.5KHz deviation for ANY conventional mode, it complains. Even if the channel is not a 2.5KHz step (e.g. 154.57)
I don't get this, I have programmed dozens of MTS2000 VHF portables before, many of them with OLDER firmware and OLDER date codes, using most current CPS (R02.03) and never had this happen.

I even opened the radio to verify everything matches date code wise, the radio was manufactured in Dec of 1999, and all boards (except the front cover which was replaced due to the famous Jedi dead pixel issue) all show date codes from that period.

Just cannot figure it out.
