I just bought a brand new OEM NTN4595DR battery for my Saber II and it states to charge it for 32 hours upon initial use. I have the NTN4734A rapid charger. This is the first brand new battery I've bought so is it really necessary to leave it in the charger for that long? Obviously I won't need to do that for subsequent charges but wanted to learn more. Thanks!

I would leave it on the charger for at least 24 hours, you need to "prime" the battery. It's best to use a slow charger but the rapid charger will drop off to a trickle rate after the green light comes one. Here is some info from http://batteryuniversity.com (a web site put up by Cadex)

"New nickel-based batteries should be trickle-charged for 24 hours prior to use. Trickle charge brings all cells to equal charge level because each cell self-discharges at a different rate. Trickle charge also redistributes the electrolyte to remedy dry spots on the separator brought on by gravitation of the electrolyte during long storage.

Some battery manufacturers do not fully form the cells before shipment. Full performance is reached after the battery has been primed through several charge/discharge cycles, either with a battery analyzer or through normal use. In some cases, 50-100 discharge/charge cycles are needed to obtain full performance. Properly formed cells perform to specification after 5-7 cycles. "

That sticker is on the battery for a reason.

OK, thank you very much. I was certain it wasn't a mistake but was curious, especially since I don't have a slow charger. My Jedi batteries stated to charge them overnight and didn't offer such a precise time.

Double check your battery in the charger to make sure it does not get hot. Even tho some chargers switch to "Green", batteries can be over charged in the "Green" Mode.

That was one of my big concerns and I've been watching it at regular intervals and neither the battery nor the charger are hot, only slightly warm.
