I've searched to see if anyone else has ever mentioned this but didn't find anything so I thought I'd better
spit it out to save the rest of you lot the hair pulling.
It seems GTX portables have this bug where if you set the timeout to max (255 sec, I think it was), the
radio will actually timeout after about 5 seconds. I had programmed a couple for a buddy and he noticed
the behavior shortly thereafter. I guessed it might be a bug, remembering the similar bug in MSF5000
repeaters. When we tried and set it to anything else the problem went away.
I don't know if this applies to the mobiles too but I'm guessing it does. I'll check next time I have one to mess
with but I'm sure someone will beat me to it.

While I can't answer your question, I'd like to give you some advice. I use these GTX radios, & they get hot after a 5 minute conversation, & my timer is set for 60 sec. They were designed for a driver to say "What's the address, 10-4, give me the next job" etc. Not long winded rag chewing. While my timer is set to 60 sec, I try to keep it under 30 sec. After a conversation, I take off the battery to feel the heatsink, & it's pretty toasty, & I'm keeping it short. Both my GTX's are the same way. Why would you want to set the timer to 4 min +? My GTX mobile is 30 watts & another story as it never gets warm, but then again, I try to keep talk time short. I'm not jumping on your case here, just trying to give you some friendly advice. The GTX's are great radios, as they don't need any mods to work on 900 ham freq's, but they were designed for quick TX responses to a dispatcher, & I'm trying to prevent you from overheating your final. Oh no; I agree 100%. All of my radios are always set to 60 sec timeout. These were for a buddy of mine
and that's what he wanted. In fact, I usually try to suggest short timeouts to people but in the end it's their
decision. (except one in particular of my bucketmouthed brethren whom I force 60 sec on....)
