I need some help. I am wanting to purchase a motorola vhf radio newer model. 100 watt. And I don't want to spend 1,000 dollars. I just want to know what is going to be the best purchase. And will uphold.

First off, we need to know some information.

How many channels do you need?
Do you need radio ID (MDC1200)?
Do you need an alphanumeric display?
Do you require a radio that supports digital operation (APCO)?
What are you using it for?
What is your budget?
What kind of vehicle?
What band split?

Keep in mind that 100 watt radios are typically a good sized, are remote mounted (seperate radio "deck" and control head) and usually command a little more $ in the new and used market.

Also to keep in mind: if this is for use on a Part 90 channel, you will need a radio that is capable of narrow-banded operation, which excludes a large segment of the legacy model array.

Just a thought, but I know of a few users around here that formally used 100w Maratracs and are now buying low power CM200's and TPL amps to go along with them. Could be a cheaper alternative

The Astro Spectras have come way down in price on the used market, a complete one can be had for $500.00 or well under that. I would not go with any of the legacy units due to the narrow banding as was pointed out above. Also as pointed out, you can get a mid power unit and use an amp, that opens up the low and mid tier radios.

Doesn't a good TPL Amp run @ $500 anyways? Or are thier some more economical /good ones out there?
Any recommendations? Preferably something I can get from Tessco

Recently I have seen 100 watt TPL amps at hamfests for as low as $25. $75 is the most expensive I've seen. And yes, I use a low power mobile with a 100 watt TPL amp in my car. That way you don't have to x-mit @ 100 watts all the time unless you need to. GARY N4KVE
