Quantar Power Supply (Revert) Question

I have a 125W VHF Quantar with a Power Supply FRU marked CPN1074E. MOL states that it's a 600W (+/-) DC/DC converter (3-output power supply).

Question: Do all Quantar Power Supplies have the edge finger connector on the rear chassis that connect to the battery revert cable harness, or should this connector only be part of battery revert type power supplies?

I have not yet measured any of the levels on the connector, but was curious if these could be tapped off to charge a battery...???? I see that the board is connected to another internal board in the power supply via a flex harness/molex connector.

Thanks for any input....!

Steve

I've seen ones with external battery revert connections and those without. If you have the molex connector on the back, as seen from the rear of the Quantar, then you have on of those that "do" have external battery connections. Its an option ordered at the time of initial order.

Hmm... The metal cover was on the port where the connector is (for the cable that connects to the battery). I am still curious if the connector is "live" or needs some other electronics...?

Is the "Revert" circuitry evident inside the power supply? I wish I had a revert supply to compare to a non-revert supply just to be sure. I also need to get out my meter to see what's on the connector.

Does anyone have photos of the revert power supply? I've seen the external photos of the external cable connected to the chassis, but was curious what else makes up a revert kit...

Thanks for your reply in any case!

Steve

I am sure that there are some Quantar experts out there who can give you more details. (And who can correct me if I'm mistaken.) However, I have opened up both the revert and non-revert versions of the supplies and can tell you what I saw.

On the non-revert version, the terminals you see on the back of the supply sit directly on the supply rails. This means that you can supply it with external DC, but you need to provide the battery charge and revert switching functions with an external device. As I recall, there are no components on this board -- just a cable that connects it to the supply rails on another board.

On the revert model, there is a different board that has components to accomplish the battery charger and revert functions in addition to the terminals that connect to the external battery. It is my impression that this is the only difference between the supplies and that in theory at least one could upgrade a non-revert supply to a revert version by just swapping the board.

There's a variety of opinion as to the best way to supply battery backup power to a Quantar. You will find a lot of discussion here. One school says to simply use the revert supply. Another favors an external battery charger / revert system. Still another advocates using an inverter /charger to supply AC.

I hope that this gives you a sketchy overview.
