iDEN Networks going through configuration changes!

Hi folks!

I noticed when my friend calls (using interconnect telco call mode) me across the coffee shop he sounds like a robot!
It seems like the "Swedes" reconfigured the base station to use interleave 6:1 AMBE vocoder for interconnect calls which used to be 3:1 VSELP (which sounded much better by the way!).

Also, when I noticed there's like 12 base radios housed in a communications rack from one antenna system. Does this mean that they are racking up base radios
to increase capacity and forcing everyone using mobile-to-mobile calls to use the AMBE vocoder? How many base radios (max?) can they put on a base station?

Just curious, if anyone can confirm this. :)

Thanks all!

Hey,

They have been doing this for some time. I remember a few years ago when I got an i860 and called another friend who had an i860 you got the same robotic voice quality.

This may heavily depend on who you are calling and the market you are currently in. Sprint has been noticeably slacking in their upgrades and maintenance of their Nextel network as they pretty much wanted everyone off it so they can give it to the Gov't. Of course they have not been able to duplicate the quality of PTT people expect with using Nextel via CDMA data.

The folks over at www.howardforums.com should be pretty informative with respect to this stuff.

You can turn off 6:1 I believe, but it's been some time since I looked in to it.

You need carrier RSS, or IF it is enabled you can do it from the keypad # * # 3 2 1 # * # will get you to the menu and if it's enabled it will allow you to select 3:1.

If this does not work feel free to drop me a PM.

Neat! I just tried this on my un-hacked i605 and sure enough, there's the interleave menu. What's funny is, 6:1 is enabled and I can't tell any difference between it and the older Condor-series phones that didn't even support AMBE.

I think it has to do with who you call...

Try setting the phone your calling to 3:1 and your phone to 3:1.... maybe it's like mixed mode for Nextel :)
