Hi All
Just wondering if any body knows if it is possible to add a VRS to a mobile XTL5000 and turn the XTL5000 into a repeater system for infrequent mobile use?
As far as i have read it the information says the VRS must be a different band, but never having played with a VRS system I'm not sure if this is possible.

Of course. Are you talking about a Motorola VRS750 (cheap) or Futurecom Mobexcom ($$$)?

I have tested a UHF VRS750 on a UHF XTL and it worked fine in band. Depending on you freq separation you will have to do some isolation of some kind.

We have the DVRS (Futurecom) units using VHF in-band. Wh have the DVRS in the mid 150's, and our Agencies repeaters in the 165 to 170's. Have not had any interference problems as yet, but they are not used very frequently.

VRS750 works fine with the O5 - won't work with an O3.
They will work in-band, but you may need to provide some RF conditioning to control desense.

Yes i will be using the VRS750 unit, What kind of isolation do you think i should use? any ideas?
I'm relitivley new to repeaters.

I have a UHF XTL5000 and a UHF VRS750. Both play together well. I have the XTL radio antenna on the outside of my Tahoe. The VRS antenna is on the inside (BNC mounted portable whip). In fact, I have the antenna in the cup holder for the third seat. I used aluminum tape under the plastic to create a ground plane for it. It looks nice, and when I trade the vehicle, I can pop in a 1/2" hole plug in the bottom of the cup holder.

Most of the frequencies I am repeating are in the 460 band. We have one frequency licensed in the lower 450's and that's what I use for the VRS. It provides a little frequency separation.

I have not noticed a significant amount of desense. It has been handy in a few instances where I had a portable in a basement and it relays to the "outside world" just great.
