XTS5000 Programming Issue

Hello all, I have a XTS5000 II. Trying to read the radio so I can re-program it to my desire. However, when I try to read the radio I get error code of "NextGen10.... OTAP-The current CPS version cannot support this codeplug as it is not compatible with this release. Please upgrade to the latest CPS version via motonline.mot.com or contacting customer service..."
I am using the only CPS I have (Motorola ASTRO 25 Portable CPS Version R10.01.00). I'm guessing this radio was programmed with a newer CPS and now my version 10 will not work correct? Couple more questions...
1. If I have codeplug saved in my version 10 can I clone this radio by writting it to the device using version 10? Will this cause problems?
2. Is there a way for me to find out what version of CPS this radio was programmed with just by going through a menu on the radio?
3. Is there anyway to get around this error code and read the radio using my older version?
Thank you

Answers for you in the order you asked them:
1) No, the CPS checks the codeplug version before writing to the radio. You'll get the same error.
2) No, the service menu doesn't show the current codeplug version.
3) No, your CPS will not read the radio if it's been hit with newer CPS than what you have.
4) Be careful, I would re-think that question. Read the board rules as far as CPS/RSS is concerned. Contact Motorola and purchase the current version of CPS for your radio.

Ok...thanks for your quick response.
Will the host version or dsp version #'s of R09.00.03 and R09.00.02 respectively tell me which version of CPS was used?
If I get the newest version, which I believe is 14.00.01, will this definetely program this radio regardless of what lesser version was used?
Thank you.

Host & DSP alone will not tell you what CPS version was last used on it. Current CPS is at R15, so if you get that, you'll be good to go. Current Host is at R15.00.07 / DSP R15.00.00

Though I don't know how its done, I do know that the Motorola Managed Maintenance Service Center that works on Govt radios CAN use their Depot Tools software to re-gen a radio to utilize older CPS. We actually had to do this once when one of our radios was 'touched' by an unauthorized programmer who was using an un-approved later version of CPS.

Dennis,
I never documented the procedure for doing the down flashing on an XTS5000 and ever since I resigned from Cobham/Wulfsberg last month, I don't think there's anyone left with the knowledge of doing it anymore.
The Only resort may be a Moto depot but I may be wrong, there was one RnO tech who I bench trained and he may have remembered the ugly details on performing the down flash but I never documented it officially.

Hey Mike, Greetings!
Yea, I just heard that you had resigned - no further info though - hope it works out well for you.
Actually, the radio that Depot downflashed was an Astro Spectra Mid-Power Mobile (D04 model). One of our helos from the BP side got 'touched' by a non-aviation guy who didn't pay attention to the fact that we use very standard levels of software nationwide. AFTER he screwed up the load using a later version of CPS and then disappeared, one of our Air guys tried to read it - sure enough, "Code Plug Too New for the Application"! Had to down the bird for several days and yank the radio to send to depot. Again, don't know how, but they were able to return it to the authorized version of CPS -
Still working contract for the agency - not sure how much longer, but its going well for now -
Take Care,
DDG
