Powering XTL5000

Recently acquired a XTL5000 O5 dashmount. I don't have an accessory plug yet and I'm trying to power the radio to test. I applied 12V, however the radio fails to power on. I found a thread mention something about ignition sense pin but is not used? Any ideas which pin needs to be shorted to get the radio up and running?

Pin 25 of J2 is ignition on the 1500/2500 series and if memory recalls the same on the 5000. If the radio is programmed to see that you need to hook it up.

The accessory cable part number for the dash mount radios = HLN6863A
EDIT: Must be a doc error - stuffer sheet figure 3-9 says pin 24 but the actual
accessory cable it is pin 25. jsikora gets the cigar!

One of the reasons just to wait and get the right cable instead of smoking something.

Regardless of whether the radio is programmed for ignition only or not, you must have the rear accessory connector attached. There is a jumper in it and the radio (even with the ignition sense NOT hooked up) will not power up.

Finally got myself a rear accessory connector and managed to power on the radio.
Now I have another minor issue with the radio. The LCD contrast appears to be very dark. Not the red/green/etc backlight but the actual dot matrix display. This appears to be intermittent but mostly remains dark (but still readable). I have swapped with another O5 control head and issue persist. Faulty flex cable perhaps?

I don't think thats good and something is not at the right amount. I had the same thing happen when I had a power malfunction with my kenwood radio

I have screwed up displays on 3 of 5 XTL5K dashmounts used as control stations. Less than 2 years old so still under warranty.They will go back when I have the downtime to set something else up to fill in while they are gone. There **MAY** be a LCD "twist" or contrast control on the control head board but I do not have the control head service manual available. I think there was thread in the past about this problem so try searching the board.

To my knowledge, there is no operator setting available to change the contrast. Only the color selection is available. Never seen anything in the software to allow you to change the contrast either. However, I could be wrong and could be proven so.

Hey guys, found this gem doing a search. Jim202, you posted this almost 5 years ago. This may or may NOT help but worth a try....
For what it is worth, you can change the view angle of the front panel display. It is done right from the front panel. If you go read the operators manual, it will explain how holding one button and then pressing another and then rotating the right knob to the desired angle, it will be much better to view.

See what happens when you start to get older. The long term memory storage PROMS start to loose their ability to play back what was stored there. You have me wondering what would happen if I go read the operators manual again. There I went and said that nasty group of words (read the operators manual).

I had this very same problem on one of our XTL5000 radios. When you power it on, the 05 head had a black background. The display was almost unreadable. If you left it on for several minutes, it would clear up. I sent it back to Mortorola under warranty. Haven't got it back yet.
