Can someone explain to me how the programming key works for this radio( if it uses one) and where can I get one? I have an 800MHZ XTL2500 that is setup for a smartzone omnilink but want to change the frequencies in it and use it on analog conventional. I have the Astro RSS and Cable but it wont let me do any thing but read the radio and change some functions.

The programing key is just for adding or changing or deleting trunking parameters.
If you need to add conventional freqs with the software(i guess you mean cps) you should
have no problem.

The radio software should not be used by someone that doesn't know what they are doing. in this case, if you have to ask, you probably shouldn't be playing with the programming of the radio.
It is too easy to make mistakes and have the radio operating where it shouldn't be. This is why there are radio techs and radio system administrators.
I will not program a radio even for a friend without a written document from the radio system owner / administrator giving permission. Too many radios are showing up on channels they are not authorized to be on. This then brings out all the bad comments from people saying your acting like a radio cop. Be it as it may, these are the facts. Like them or not.
By the way, the "Astro" RSS is not even the correct software for this XTL2500 radio.

Obviously if he can read the radio and change some features as he states, he has the correct software, improper naming aside.
kd8ake, it's possible the radio was programmed using an ASK, or "advanced system key", which can lock you out of even conventional programming if so configured.
You can try to add a conventional channel. It's as easy as going into the zone/channel assignment tab, and pressing the '+' sign at the top to add another channel. By default it will be conventional, and you enter in your frequencies, PL/DPL, etc in that screen.
If the '+' sign is grayed out, it needs an ASK, which would only be available through the system administrator.
