can't connect to gp680

hello outta there,
I have a little problem with one of my gp680. my system is working fine with other gp680. I got a new gp680 (via ebay) and I wanted to program it. but I can't read it out. when I click on the read button nothing happens...after a certain time the software says that it can't connect to the radio.
as the original seller of the gp680 can't help me - my questions now are - could it be that there is a password on the radio? or locked in some kind? it works obviously, there is no locked sign or anything on it. is there maybe a certain key i have to push before start reading it out? and like i said before I can't work with the same type radio with no problem!
I really would appreciate any help anyone may give me here for this problem.
thank you very much for your help in advance,
best regards, bhubert

There should not be a button that you need to press, and radio lock does not affect the process of actually reading the radio.
I am going to assume that the radio is turned on, and you have a known working cable, and a known working RIB box with a fresh battery or DC power.
I would start looking at the accessory connector on the side of the radio. Is it damaged in any way? Has the radio been recased? It's very easy to tear that flex when removing it from the old case, and it can cause the radio to not be able to be read.

hi jake,
thank you very much for your reply! I can be sure - like I wrote before - that my system is working basically with GP680 - I have another piece which is working very well on my laptop and cables and boxes. So this can't be the problem. Also, the GP680 was programmed just around four weeks ago before I bought it over ebay - so this has to work also.
I know this is really strange - it doesn't look like that something is damaged. The item looks nearly brandnew.
Just to reassure - when there would be a password protection this would not deny to read the item out?
thanks best regards, bhubert

When you read a radio that has a programming password, the CPS reads the radio, validates all the data, and then brings up a window asking for the password.
What you are having problem with is connecting to the radio itself. Again, this would lead me to believe that either the internal flex is damaged, or the accessory connector is damaged in some way that may be causing not all of the pins on the programming cable to connect to the radio.
What is the firmware version in this radio, compared to your other radios?

hi jake,
ok let's assume that there is something wrong with the pins - this had to happen within the last month in this case because it was programmed in january before. how can I read out the firmware without getting connected to the radio itself? what could I do about this contacts or can I test them if they are ok at all? and what about that internal flex? sorry, I am not a real buff with radios... it is just read them and program with new frequencies - but not about hardware
thanks again very much, best regards, bhubert

This is my suggestion....
A) You know that you have good programming cables.
B) You know that you have other radios that you can program.
I would take the front case (with electronics) off of a known working radio (very carefully), and take the front case off of the radio that you are having a hard time programming, and put the case from the known working radio onto the radio that you can't program, and then try to read the radio with the software. If the problem is in the accessory connector or flex, then that will isolate the problem, and you will know that you need to replace those components in the future.
If that works, I would do any programming that you need to do with the other case on the radio so that you can at least use it until you get the problem worked out.
Now.. another thought since you said that you got this radio off of ebay... Are you absolutely sure that it is a GP680 and not another model radio with a GP680 sticker on it?

hi Jake,
sorry for the long delay in responding to you last post. But today I was able to see something real interesting. I got my GP680 to our fd office where it was programmed without any problems. Unfortunately I was unable to find out which software version they use and also the guy who did the programming doesn't know anything about it - he just clicks three or four times and the radio is finished.
Now the thing seems like this - the office uses a usb cable like I do. Their cable is working with my radio, my cable is not working with my radio. Although the cable is working with other GP680. The software seems to be the same.
Now the only thing where I see a difference is, that my fd just writes the radio and I want to read it. Could it be that the radio can be programmed but not read???
I can't write anything on the radio because I am not into mpt programming, I should have some info before.
Anyway is this possible? The only thing I would like to reach is that I am capable to listen to MPT transmissions. BTW: is there any kind of scanning mode for mpt channels on the gp680 like there is on the gp360 for "normal" radio channels???
Thank you very much in advance, best regards, bhubert

you should of stated you were using a usb cable in your original post. get a real rib and cable and your problems will all go away. rule of thumb, no matter what miracles people claim, if the factory never made a usb programming cable for your radio, don't try to make one work, it will eventually cost you a radio. They may work in some cases but now as you can see, they are not reliable and when the next new and great update for usb comes out from windows it might read your new radio and not the old one. You could install an ipod and the usb drivers that it installs could make that cable stop working totally. So who knows, just stick with what the factory suggests

hi HLA,
ok I agree to this to try it with another thing - is this something like a rib box???
