Newbie questions

I have recently acquired 5 or 6 D61LRA9734BK Radius's and 1 CDM 750 model AAM25DKC9AA1AN. I am aware that these are all low band models. What I am wondering, before I buy the cables, can these be reprogrammed to either 6 meter or 2 meter ham bands? If so, what else besides the repeater cable and antenna would I need to make a repeater with 2 of the Radius's? Thanks in advance, Jim

you can't just go building a repeater and throw up an antennae, you need a license and the fcc will give you the channels you can use. Have you done that yet?

Since they are low band they may be able to go to 6 meter. No way will they be able to do 2 meter. If your a Ham you should know that any repeater has to be coordinated though the state repeater coordinators.

HLA, I realize this. I am wanting to get the radios ready. I have a ham license, have had for about 4 years. The FCC does not dictate the channels you use, the repeater coordinators do.
FireCpt, that is what I wanted to know. Since I have posted this, I have found a site with the instructions on how to program and realign it for 6m.
What will I need to do to create the repeater? Is it just a cable between the 2 radios?

You would need the Motorola R.I.C.K. repeater interface kit. I have several for sale.

I can add that there are some cheaper cables on ebay that are similar to the RICK unit, but I would prefer the original. I have seen a few of the others with quality issues.

Where in Part 97 does it say amateur repeaters have to be coordinated?

I ask this because I already know the answer to the question.

Coordination is optional. It is not required. This is not Part 90 we're talking about here.

Jeff,

Fact is that if a ham sets up an uncoordinated repeater and there are any interference problems with another machine the FCC will look to the local coordinating body to clear things up, at least in the early stages of the matter. It doesn't say so in Part 97 but it's the reality of the repeater world today in the USA.

Regards,

Thanks Tom,

I know what you mean Jeff. Its not a rule but an unwritten rule with the state coordinators.
