APX 7000: Can bands be redesignated via Flash upgrade?

My agency has two APX 7000's on loan from Motorola. We love them, and I'm trying to answer a few "hurdle" questions for our comm. manager. We run a UHF High (483.xxxx) environment, with nearby agencies in VHF. Thus, the model we're considering is the UHFH/VHF version. There's talk that the county will go to an 800 trunk soon. We don't want to dump a boatload on new radios and wind up having to do it again should a trunk get put together.

I noticed that the band designations seem to be features encoded into the flash code. This begs the question:
Can a UHFH/VHF APX 7000 (and for that matter, the 7500) be Flash upgraded to change the supported bands without having to replace the actual radio in the event that our needs change?

If so, is there Motorola documentation available online that I can give our administration to support this?

Thanks all!

The RF board limits the radio to what it is capable of. So the answer to your question is no they can't be changed without a hardware AND software change.

Not sure how many your looking to acquire, but if it is a decent amount why don't you see if you can do a lease until the other agency goes 800. Then you can purchase the U/800 version at some time in the future.
