M1225 refurb - thermal paste

I'm refurbishing an M1225 that looks like someone spilled a Coke into it. Everything inside the radio around the front speaker area was covered in a brown sticky goo. I tossed the speaker, but everything else has cleaned up all right.
In the process of washing the chassis/heat sink, most of the thermal paste has been removed. The layer of paste on the bottom of the main board components is still intact.
This radio will only be used to monitor. No transmitting. Will it still be necessary for me to reapply a fresh layer of thermal paste, or are the extra heat dissipation measures needed mostly for the heat generated during transmitting? Is it possible that the amount of paste left on the mainboard is enough?
If not, what are the specifications for the proper paste I need to use for the M1225 and/or Maxtrac/GM300 radios? I've caught the name Wakefield in searching this forum, but no mentions of a specific type/item for this application.
Thanks.
